How to Use the Alternate and Mix PDF Online

Alternate and Mix PDF: before and after PDF A BEFORE ALTERNATE ANDMIX PDF PDF A AFTER

Alternate and Mix takes two PDFs, one holding the front sides and one holding the backs, and shuffles them together so page 1 is followed by its back, then page 2, and so on. It exists for single-sided scanners: scan the pile once, turn it over, scan again, then combine the two results here. If the second scan came out back to front, one checkbox reverses it before mixing.

Merges a stack of fronts and a stack of backs into one correctly ordered file. This is the fix for scanning a double-sided document on a single-sided scanner: run the fronts, flip the stack, run the backs, then interleave them here.

At a glance

  • Takes: Two PDFs: the front sides and the back sides
  • Gives: One PDF with pages alternating front, back, front, back
  • Option: "The backs were scanned in reverse order", ticked by default
  • Keeps: Text selectable and fonts embedded; pages are copied, not reprinted
  • Runs: Entirely on your computer; neither scan leaves it

Why Organize PDF Pages?

A PDF is easiest to use when its pages are in the right order and hold only what the reader needs. Merging, splitting, rotating and removing pages turns a messy scan or a pile of files into one tidy document.

“A well-ordered PDF saves every reader a little time.”
  • One file instead of many
  • No more sideways scans
  • Smaller parts for email
  • Blank and spare pages gone
  • Pages in the right order
  • Only the pages you need
  • Booklets ready for printing
  • Original file left untouched

Popular Uses for PDF Page Tools

These are the everyday jobs that bring people to the page tools.

  • Job applications Join a CV, cover letter and certificates into one PDF for the recruiter.
  • Sharing one chapter Pull a single chapter out of a long textbook or report for a classmate.
  • Fixing phone scans Turn pages that came out sideways or upside down after scanning with a phone.
  • Reordering a report Move the appendix, cover or index to where it belongs before you send it.
  • Printing booklets Arrange pages so a folded stack of paper reads like a small booklet.
  • Double-sided scans Merge separately scanned front and back pages into their proper order.
  • Removing pages Delete a blank sheet, an old draft page or a page with private details.
  • Email size limits Split a large PDF every few pages so each part fits an email attachment.

Rewrites the page tree instead of reprinting, so text stays selectable and fonts stay embedded

Copies only the objects the kept pages need, so one extracted page is not the size of the whole file

Tips and Good to Know

  1. Both files should hold the same number of pages. If one pile skipped a sheet, count the pages in each PDF first or the pairs will drift out of step.

  2. This only interleaves; it does not straighten or rotate anything. If the backs came out upside down, use Rotate Selected PDF Pages on that file first.

  3. For a single PDF that already contains both sides in the wrong order, Extract Odd Pages and Extract Even Pages will separate them, or Reverse PDF Pages may be all you need.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about this tool.

Do I need to install anything to use the Alternate and Mix PDF?

No. Alternate and Mix PDF runs entirely in your browser — there is nothing to download, no extension and no desktop program. It works the same on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iPhone.

Is it safe to use the Alternate and Mix PDF online?

Safer than the usual alternative, yes. Most online tools upload your file to a server you know nothing about, where it sits until someone deletes it. Here the file never leaves your device — the processing happens in the page itself, so there is no server copy to leak, retain or sell.

Will Alternate and Mix PDF lower the quality of my PDF?

No. Rearranging, rotating, splitting or joining pages does not re-compress the text or pictures inside them, so they look as sharp as before. Tools that change the layout, such as booklets, scale the pages without redrawing their contents.

Can I use Alternate and Mix PDF on a phone or tablet?

Yes. It works in Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox on phones and tablets as well as computers. Long documents take longer on a phone, but the steps and the result are the same.

Can I rearrange a password-protected PDF?

You need to remove the password first. Use Unlock PDF with the password you already know, then come back and rearrange the pages. None of the tools here can open a file whose password you do not have.

Is Alternate and Mix PDF really free with no watermark?

Yes. There is no charge, no sign-up and no watermark added to your pages. The file you download contains only your own pages, arranged the way you set them.
