How to Change an RTF File to PDF

RTF to PDF Converter: before and after RTF A RTF FILE RTF TO PDF PDF A PDF FILE

RTF files still turn up everywhere: exported from hospital and billing software, saved by WordPad, attached to court or tender papers, or sitting in an old office folder. Many phones cannot open them at all, and even computers sometimes show a wall of code instead of text.

This converter reads the RTF on your device, follows its formatting codes and places the result on fresh PDF pages with proper wrapping, margins and optional page numbers. Paragraph spacing, indents, list numbers and page breaks from the original are respected.

Bold, italic, underline, font colours, highlights and text sizes carry over, and each named font is replaced by a close relative from the standard PDF set. Simple tables keep their columns and borders, and PNG or JPEG pictures appear where they sit. Headers and footers inside the RTF are left out. Characters stored as Unicode survive, which covers the rupee sign and text in the major Indian scripts.

Five Steps to a Readable PDF From RTF

No setup is needed. The defaults give an A4 portrait page with numbers at the foot.

  1. 1. Find your .rtf file

Look for a name ending in .rtf. Files from WordPad, TextEdit and many billing or lab programs use this format.

  2. 2. Load it into the tool

Click Choose file or let the file drop onto the box above. The browser reads it as plain text, since that is what RTF really is underneath.

  3. 3. Decide the page format

Select a paper size and the direction of the page. Portrait A4 suits letters and reports.

  4. 4. Margin and numbering

The Margin slider sets the white border from 0 to 30%. Keep Add page numbers on for anything longer than a page or two.

  5. 5. Create the PDF

Hit Convert to PDF and a PDF with your file’s name is saved. Read through the first page to be sure the text looks as you expect.

    Kept and not kept:

    • Kept: bold, italics, colours, sizes, alignment
    • Kept: simple tables, PNG and JPEG pictures, page breaks
    • Not kept: headers, footers, embedded objects

What Is an RTF File?

Rich Text Format was created by Microsoft in 1987 so that word processors could swap formatted documents. Inside, an RTF is ordinary text mixed with control codes, such as a code that says “new paragraph” or “bold on”. Word, WordPad, LibreOffice and TextEdit can all read and write it.

This tool follows those codes to find where each paragraph starts and ends, which words are bold or coloured, and where a table row or picture begins. It decodes accented and Unicode letters and skips the hidden parts of the file. Devanagari, Tamil, Telugu and four more Indian scripts get Noto fonts. Japanese, Arabic, Chinese and Gurmukhi are still missing, so any such letter turns into a question mark, and the tool mentions it once the PDF is ready.

Rich Text File

.RTF

A text document with formatting codes, from WordPad, TextEdit, Word or older office software.

Where RTF files come from

  • WordPad and TextEdit notes
  • Lab and clinic reports
  • Billing software exports
  • Legal and court drafts
  • Old office archives
  • Letters saved long ago

Why Convert RTF Into PDF?

RTF is a format from another era. PDF is what phones, portals and printers expect today, so converting makes an old document usable again.

“An old file is only useful if people can open it.”
  • Opens on any phone
  • Accepted by online forms
  • Stops accidental edits
  • Better for long-term records
  • No more screens of raw code
  • Prints on neat pages
  • Keeps Unicode letters
  • Simple to share

Typical Uses for RTF to PDF

People reach for this converter in situations like these.

  • Medical reports Some clinic systems export reports as RTF. A PDF version is easier to show a doctor on a phone or attach to an insurance claim.
  • Bills from older software Accounting and billing programs that save RTF can have their output turned into PDFs customers can open.
  • Legal drafts Advocates and clerks receiving RTF drafts can save a fixed PDF copy for filing or email.
  • WordPad documents Notes written in WordPad on an office PC become shareable PDFs.
  • Clearing old folders Convert decades-old letters and notices before the software that made them disappears.
  • Email attachments An RTF attachment that will not open on your phone can be converted and read in seconds.
  • Indian language text RTF documents typed in Tamil or Hindi keep their letters as long as they were saved as Unicode.
  • Portal uploads Job, tender and exam portals rarely accept RTF. Turn it into a PDF first.

RTF to PDF Features

A careful reader for a messy old format.

Text

Real words, not codes

Control codes, font tables and hidden groups are stepped over so the PDF shows your writing rather than the markup.

Styling

Formatting carried over

Bold, italic, underline, colours, highlights, text sizes, alignment and indents follow the RTF, and page breaks stay where they were.

Tables

Tables and pictures

Simple tables keep their columns, borders and shading, and PNG or JPEG pictures stored in the file are drawn in place.

Letters

Unicode and accents decoded

Accented European letters and Unicode escapes are decoded, so regional-language text reappears as real letters.

Works for:

  • Tamil
  • Hindi
  • Malayalam
  • Gujarati
Paper

Your choice of page

Three paper sizes, either orientation, and a slider for the white border.

Numbers

Page numbers

Optional numbers at the bottom of each page keep printed copies in order.

When an RTF to PDF Makes Sense

This converter helps most when you are:

  • Stuck with an attachment your phone will not open
  • Uploading to a portal that wants PDF
  • Moving old records to a modern format
  • Printing a clean copy of a note
  • Sharing a report with a doctor
  • Filing a draft as a fixed copy
  • Forwarding a letter to someone without Word
  • Seeing code instead of text in a viewer

Tips for Converting RTF Documents

  1. Simple tables convert well. A table with cells merged down several rows can come out uneven; if that matters, reopen the RTF in Word, keep it as .docx and run that through our Word to PDF page.

  2. Pictures stored as PNG or JPEG are drawn. Old drawing formats such as WMF are skipped, so paste those in again as an ordinary picture.

  3. Need a letterhead or page footer on every page? RTF headers are left out here, so use the Word to PDF route for those files.

  4. Glance at the first paragraph of the PDF. Very old files sometimes carry leftover header text that you may want to remove in the source.

  5. If Indian letters appear as odd symbols, the RTF was saved in an old non-Unicode font. Re-save it from a modern word processor first.

  6. A smaller margin fits more words per line, which suits long plain-text reports.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about this tool.

What is the easiest way to turn RTF into PDF?

Load the .rtf here, adjust the paper and margin only if you care to, and hit Convert to PDF. The result saves at once. You pay nothing, create no account and get no watermark.

Will bold, italics and fonts be kept?

Yes. Bold, italic, underline, colours, highlights, text sizes and alignment all carry over. Font names are mapped onto three basic families, plain, serif and typewriter, so the letters look close to the original rather than identical.

What happens to tables and pictures in my RTF?

Simple tables keep their rows, columns, borders and shading. PNG and JPEG pictures show up at their original spot. Embedded objects, such as a linked spreadsheet, and old WMF drawings are left out.

Can it convert RTF files with Tamil or Hindi text?

Yes, provided the letters were saved as Unicode, which current versions of Word and LibreOffice do. Seven Indian scripts, Tamil and Hindi among them, then print correctly. Gurmukhi, Arabic, Japanese and Chinese letters still become question marks.

Why can my phone not open an RTF file?

Most phones have no built-in RTF reader, and some apps show the raw control codes instead of text. Converting to PDF gives you a file every phone can display.

Does my RTF file leave my computer?

No. The browser reads it as plain text and builds the PDF on that same machine. Nothing is transmitted, which matters for medical notes and legal drafts.

How do I open an RTF file without Word?

On Windows, WordPad opens RTF. On a Mac, TextEdit does. On any device, you can convert it here and read the resulting PDF instead.

Does it work on a mobile phone?

Yes. On Android or iPhone, fetch the RTF from an email or the Files app, then press Convert to PDF. The PDF appears among your other downloads.

How long can the RTF document be?

There is no fixed limit. RTF files are mostly text, so even long ones convert quickly. Only your device’s memory sets a ceiling.

Why does it say it does not look like an RTF file?

A real RTF begins with the code {\rtf. A file that was renamed to .rtf, or a Word .docx with the wrong ending, will be refused. Use the matching converter for the real format.

Can I get headings in the PDF?

Yes, in the sense that a heading set in large bold text in the RTF stays large and bold in the PDF. RTF has no separate heading tag, so what you see is what was typed.

Will my formatting stay the same after conversion?

Simple layouts usually come through well, including headings, tables and images. Complex documents with unusual fonts, text boxes or tracked changes may shift slightly, so check the preview or the downloaded PDF before sending it anywhere important.

Can I use RTF to PDF on my phone?

Yes, it runs in the mobile browser you already have. Choose a file from your gallery or files app, convert it, and the PDF is saved to your downloads. Large files take longer on a phone.

Is there a file size limit for RTF to PDF?

There is no fixed limit set by the site. Because conversion happens on your device, the practical size depends on its memory. Most everyday documents and photos convert without trouble on a modern phone or computer.
