How to Convert Time Between Time Zones

Time Zone Converter: before and after TEXT A YOUR INPUT TIME ZONECONVERTER DONE A RESULT

Setting up a call between Chennai and New York, or checking when a live stream starts in your city, always seems to involve counting hours on your fingers. This converter takes a clock time in one zone and tells you the matching time in another, including whether it lands on the same day, the day before or the next day.

It lists about thirty zones by their common abbreviations, from IST and GST to EST, PST, BST, CET, JST and AEST, with separate entries for summer and winter time. It also shows the gap between the two zones and each one’s offset from UTC.

Steps to Convert a Time to Another Zone

  1. 1. Enter the time

Type or pick the clock time in the Time box, as hours and minutes. The page starts with 14:30.

  2. 2. Choose From zone and To zone

Select where the time is from, such as IST for India, and where you want it shown, such as EDT for New York in summer.

  3. 3. Read the converted time

The main card shows the time in the target zone and notes whether it is the same day, the day before or the next day.

  4. 4. Check the difference

Below it, the Difference row says how far ahead or behind the target zone is, and each zone’s UTC offset is listed.

What Is a Time Zone Offset?

Every time zone is defined by how far it sits from Coordinated Universal Time, UTC. India Standard Time is UTC+5:30 all year, Nepal is UTC+5:45 and US Eastern is UTC-5 in winter. Converting means removing one offset and adding the other. Many countries change their clocks in summer, which is why this tool lists winter and summer codes, such as EST and EDT, separately.

Why Use Date and Time Calculators?

Counting days on a calendar, adding working days to a deadline or converting IST to a client’s time zone is easy to get wrong. These calculators handle leap years, month lengths and time zone offsets for you.

“One wrong day on a deadline can cost more than it seems.”
  • Exact days between two dates
  • IST to any time zone
  • Your age to the day
  • Meetings planned across countries
  • Working days without weekends
  • Leap years counted correctly
  • Timesheets added up
  • Printable calendars in seconds

Popular Uses for Date Calculators

Most date and time questions come from work, travel or family plans.

  • Notice periods Count the exact last working day after giving a sixty or ninety day notice.
  • Client calls abroad Find a meeting time that suits people in India, London and California.
  • Age for forms Work out exact age in years, months and days for an exam or job form.
  • Project deadlines Add business days to a start date and see when the work is really due.
  • Weekly timesheets Add up start and finish times, breaks and overtime for a week of shifts.
  • Birthday countdowns See how many days are left until a birthday, wedding or exam.
  • Printed calendars Make a monthly calendar for the fridge, a notice board or a classroom.
  • Timestamps for developers Convert Unix timestamps and ISO 8601 dates into a readable date and time.

What the Time Zone Converter Shows

Summer and winter entries

US, European, British and Australian zones appear in both their standard and daylight saving forms.

Half-hour zones

India at +5:30 and Nepal at +5:45 are handled exactly, not rounded to the hour.

Tips for Scheduling Across Zones

  1. Check which season the other place is in. The US and Europe switch to summer time on different dates, so pick EDT or CEST only when they apply.

  2. India does not use daylight saving, so IST is always UTC+5:30. The difference to London changes from 5:30 to 4:30 in the British summer.

  3. When inviting people, write both times in the message, such as 7:30 pm IST / 10:00 am EDT, to avoid confusion.

  4. For finding hours that suit both sides, try the Meeting Time Planner, which lists overlapping office hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about this tool.

What time is 2:30 pm IST in New York?

In winter, when New York uses EST, 14:30 IST is 04:00 the same day. In summer, on EDT, it is 05:00. Choose the right code in the To zone list to match the date.

Does the converter adjust for daylight saving automatically?

No. Each zone here has a fixed offset, and summer and winter versions are separate entries. That keeps the result predictable, but you need to choose, for example, BST instead of GMT during the British summer.

How far ahead is India from UTC?

India Standard Time is 5 hours 30 minutes ahead of UTC throughout the year. Pick UTC and IST in the two lists and the Difference row shows +05:30.

Why does the result say the day before?

When you convert to a zone that is behind yours, an early morning time can fall on the previous calendar day there. For example, 09:00 IST is 19:30 PST the evening before.

Is my zone missing from the list?

The list covers the most widely used zones and abbreviations. For a zone not shown, pick another with the same UTC offset; the maths is identical because only the offset matters.

Why is my day count off by one?

Some counts include both the start and the end date, and some include only one. That single day is usually the difference. Check which way your office, court or contract counts before relying on a deadline.

Does Time Zone Converter cost anything?

No. There is no sign-up and no limit. Use it on a phone or computer whenever a date question comes up, and the dates you enter are not saved anywhere.

Are leap years counted?

Yes. The calculators use the real calendar, so 29 February is counted in leap years and every month has its correct number of days, including the short ones.

Does Time Zone Converter use my device’s clock?

It reads today’s date and time from your device where it needs them, such as for age or countdowns. If your phone or computer clock is wrong, correct it and the results will follow.

How far is IST from GMT?

India Standard Time is five and a half hours ahead of GMT and UTC, all year round, because India does not change its clocks for summer. Other countries do, so their gap with IST can shift.
