How to Preview a Markdown File Online
README files, meeting notes from Obsidian and documentation on GitHub are all written in Markdown, a plain text style where # makes a heading and ** makes bold. In a text editor you see the symbols, not the result. This viewer shows the source on the left and the formatted version on the right.
Open a .md file or paste your text and the preview updates as you type. Headings, bold, italics, strikethrough, links, lists, quotes, tables, code blocks and dividers are drawn the way a reader will see them.

Steps to Render Markdown
-
1. Bring in your Markdown
Pick a .md or .markdown file with Open file, drop it on the source pane, or paste text. The Sample button fills in a short example.
-
2. Read the rendered view
The Rendered pane on the right shows the formatted page. Links are clickable and tables line up in columns.
-
3. Edit and watch it change
As you type on the left, the preview keeps pace. Turn on Wrap for long paragraphs so you can edit without scrolling sideways.
-
4. Save the file
Press Download to save your edited Markdown as a .md file, or Copy to paste it somewhere else.

What Is Markdown?
Markdown is a lightweight way to format text using ordinary characters. A line starting with # is a heading, text between ** marks is bold, a dash starts a bullet point and three backticks begin a block of code. Because the file stays plain text, it opens anywhere, works well with version control and can be turned into web pages or documents.
Why Use an Online File Viewer?
Not every computer has the right program for a YAML, VCF, SRT or log file, and installing one just to look inside is a chore. A viewer opens the file in your browser and shows it neatly next to its source text.
“Sometimes you just need to see what is inside the file.”
- No software to install
- Data laid out as tables
- Subtitles shown with timings
- Code tried out in the page
- Colour-coded source text
- Contacts and calendars readable
- Works on shared computers
- Private files stay local
Popular Uses for Code and Data Viewers
People open these when a file arrives and nothing on the computer will show it.
- Checking a JSON response Open a JSON or YAML file as a readable tree instead of one long line.
- Reading contact backups See the names and numbers inside a VCF file exported from a phone.
- Opening calendar invites Read the date, time and place in an ICS file before adding it.
- Checking subtitles View SRT or VTT subtitles with their timings to spot a missing line.
- Reading log files Scroll through a server or app log with the lines laid out clearly.
- Previewing CSV and TSV Look at a data file as a table without opening a spreadsheet program.
- Trying a code snippet Run a short Python or JavaScript example from a tutorial and see the output.
- Viewing SVG graphics See how an SVG icon or drawing looks next to the markup behind it.
What the Markdown Viewer Renders
Headings and emphasis
Six heading levels, bold, italics, strikethrough and inline code in backticks.
Tables
Pipe tables with a divider row are laid out as proper columns, which is where raw Markdown is hardest to read.
Code blocks
Fenced blocks between triple backticks keep their spacing in a monospaced box.
Lists and quotes
Bulleted and numbered lists, block quotes and horizontal rules all appear as intended.
Side-by-side editing
Source and preview sit next to each other, with a Split view toggle for smaller screens.

Tips for Writing Markdown
-
Leave a blank line between paragraphs. Two lines that touch are joined into one paragraph.
-
In a table, the second row of dashes is what makes it a table. Without it you just get lines with pipes.
-
Images written as are not drawn in this preview; you will see the link text instead.
-
Check that every link has both parts, [text](address), with no space between the bracket and the parenthesis.
Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about this tool.
How do I open a .md file?
Any text editor can open it, but you will see the raw symbols. To read it formatted, choose it with Open file on this page. The right-hand pane shows headings, lists and tables properly styled.
Does it support GitHub-style tables?
Yes. Pipe tables with a header row and a dash divider row are drawn as columns. Other GitHub extras, such as task-list checkboxes and emoji shortcodes, are shown as plain text.
Can I edit Markdown here and save it?
Yes. The left pane is fully editable and the preview follows your typing. Press Download to save the result as a .md file.
Can I export the preview as PDF or Word?
This page previews only. To make a document, use one of the Markdown conversion tools on this site, or print the page from your browser.
Are my notes kept private?
Yes. The formatting is drawn inside your own browser and your text is never uploaded, which suits personal journals and internal company docs.
Does Markdown Viewer upload my file?
No. The file is read by your browser and shown on screen without being sent anywhere. Config files with passwords, contact lists and logs remain on your own computer.
Do the online compilers run real code?
Some languages, such as Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, Lua and SQL, run inside your browser. For others, the page is mainly for reading and sharing the code, so read the note on that page to know what to expect.
Does Markdown Viewer cost anything or need a login?
Neither. There is no fee, no sign-up and no cap on how many files you open. It works the same on a work laptop, a home computer or a phone.
What if my file is very large?
Large logs and data files depend on your device’s memory, because the whole file is read in the browser. If a huge file feels slow, try a computer with more memory or view a smaller part of it.
Can I open a file from my phone?
Yes. Use the file picker to choose it from your phone’s storage or a downloaded attachment, and the contents appear on the page. A larger screen is easier for long files, but everything works on mobile.
