How to Turn an ODT Into a PDF
LibreOffice Writer saves files as .odt by default. That is a fine open standard, but many people you send it to will double-click and get an error, especially on phones. Government and college portals also tend to accept PDF only.
This tool opens the .odt inside your browser and reads the paragraph and character styles Writer saved: bold and italic, colours, highlights, sizes, alignment and indents. Bullet and numbered lists keep their markers, tables keep their borders and cell colours, and pictures appear in place. The header and footer repeat on every page, with page numbers filled in.
The paper and margin come from your choices here, because the page settings inside the file are not read, and Writer fonts are drawn in the closest standard PDF typeface. Multi-column sections come out as one column. For a pixel-perfect copy, LibreOffice’s own Export as PDF is ideal; for a quick, private PDF without opening Writer, use this page. Tamil, Hindi, Telugu and other Indian scripts, plus ₹, print correctly.

What Is an ODT File?
ODT stands for OpenDocument Text. It is an international standard (ISO/IEC 26300) for word-processing files, used by LibreOffice, OpenOffice and several government office packages. Inside, an .odt is a zipped folder holding the text as structured XML plus styles and pictures.
This converter reads that XML directly: the styles, headings, paragraphs, lists, table cells, pictures and the header and footer. Fonts are standard PDF fonts matched to the look of the originals, with Noto fonts brought in automatically when the text contains an Indian script such as Kannada or Tamil. Gurmukhi, Chinese, Arabic and Japanese cannot be drawn yet; they turn into "?", and a note says so after conversion.

- Office orders and circulars
- Student reports
- Letters and applications
- Manuals and notes
- Minutes and project reports
- Draft agreements
Why Convert ODT to PDF?
An .odt is perfect while you are writing in LibreOffice. When someone else has to read it, a PDF avoids the “cannot open this file” moment.
“Write in the open format, share in the universal one.”
- Readable on every phone
- Same view on Windows and Mac
- Protects the final wording
- Friendlier for email
- Accepted by more portals
- Ready to print
- Indian scripts displayed
- A stable copy to keep
Where ODT to PDF Helps
These are the usual reasons people bring an .odt here.
- Government circulars Some state offices draft in LibreOffice. Convert circulars and orders so the public can open them.
- College assignments Students on Linux or LibreOffice can hand in reports as the PDF their portal demands.
- Applications and letters Send a letter typed in Writer to an office that only reads PDF.
- Regional language notices A notice typed in Tamil, Kannada or Malayalam keeps its letters in the PDF.
- Meeting minutes Circulate minutes as a fixed record that nobody can quietly edit.
- Manuals and guides Share a how-to document with headings and lists as a clean PDF.
- Reading on a phone Turn an .odt attachment your phone cannot open into something it can.
- Long-term records Keep a PDF beside the editable file for the archive.
ODT to PDF Features
The parts of your document the converter understands.
Writer styles followed
Writer’s paragraph and character styles decide how each line looks: headings, bold, italic, colours, highlights, text size, alignment and indent. Pictures stay where you put them.
Lists keep their numbers
Bulleted lists keep their bullet character and numbered lists keep their numbering style, level by level.
Tables with borders
Table cells keep their borders, background colours and merged columns, fitted to the page width.
Indian languages
Seven Indian scripts keep their joined letters, from Gujarati to Malayalam, and Greek, Cyrillic and ₹ are covered as well.

Tips for Better ODT Conversions
-
Set the paper size here to match the one used in Writer. The page settings saved in the .odt are not read, so A4 is used unless you pick another.
-
Pictures anchored inside the text convert best. A picture floating beside a paragraph is placed in line with the text instead.
-
For plain pages, untick Include the header and footer. Simple numbers then appear at the foot, as long as Add page numbers is on.
-
Multi-column pages come out as one column. That usually reads better on phones anyway.
-
Keep tables reasonably narrow. Very wide tables are shrunk to fit and the text becomes small.
-
Look over the PDF once before sending, especially the first page and any tables.
Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about this tool.
Can I make a PDF from ODT with no LibreOffice installed?
Yes. Bring the .odt to this page and start the conversion with one tap. Reading and typesetting run in the browser, so no office program is required on the device.
Will the PDF look exactly like my Writer document?
Close, but not identical. Text styles, colours, lists, tables, pictures and the header and footer carry over. Writer fonts are swapped for similar standard ones, the paper size is whatever you pick here, and multi-column sections become one column. For an identical look, use Export as PDF inside LibreOffice.
Are images in my ODT file included?
Yes. Every picture stored in the .odt is drawn in its place at Writer’s size, scaled down only if it would overflow the page width. Pictures linked from outside the file cannot be reached and are skipped.
Will my Telugu or Tamil ODT convert properly?
Yes. Writer documents in Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Bengali or Gujarati come out with correctly shaped letters. The unsupported ones for now are Punjabi, Japanese, Chinese and Arabic, which print as "?".
What is the difference between ODT and DOCX?
Both are editable word-processing formats stored as zipped XML. ODT is the OpenDocument standard used by LibreOffice; DOCX is Microsoft’s format. Most modern programs open both, but phones and portals prefer PDF.
Is my document sent to a server?
No. The .odt is unzipped and its text read by JavaScript in this tab, and the PDF is written there too. The document never leaves your device.
Can I open an ODT file on my phone?
Most phones cannot open .odt without an extra app. Convert it here in your mobile browser and open the PDF with any viewer.
Are tables kept?
Yes. Rows and cells keep their borders and background colours, and cells merged across columns stay merged. The table is fitted to the page width.
Can I convert an ODS spreadsheet or ODP presentation here?
No, this page reads .odt text documents only. Our ODS to PDF page takes spreadsheets, and PowerPoint to PDF also accepts Impress .odp files.
Are the header and footer kept?
Yes, as long as the Include the header and footer switch stays on. Writer’s header and footer appear at the top and foot of each sheet, with page number and page count fields worked out for you.
Is there a maximum file size?
Nothing is uploaded, so there is no upload cap. How large a file you can convert depends only on your device’s memory; ordinary documents are no problem.
Why did I get “That .odt could not be read”?
The file may be damaged or not a real OpenDocument file. Open it in LibreOffice, use Save As to write a fresh .odt, and try again.
Will my formatting stay the same after conversion?
Simple layouts usually come through well, including headings, tables and images. Complex documents with unusual fonts, text boxes or tracked changes may shift slightly, so check the preview or the downloaded PDF before sending it anywhere important.
Can I use ODT to PDF on my phone?
Yes, it runs in the mobile browser you already have. Choose a file from your gallery or files app, convert it, and the PDF is saved to your downloads. Large files take longer on a phone.
