How to Lock a PDF With a Password
Salary slips, medical reports, tax returns and signed agreements travel by email and chat every day. A password means that even if the file lands in the wrong inbox, it cannot be opened without the word you chose.
Type a password twice, choose what readers may do once it is open, and press Protect PDF. Printing is allowed by default, while copying and editing are off. You can also set a separate owner password that controls those permissions.
All of it happens in the browser tab. Sending the unlocked original to a server first would rather defeat the point, so that never happens here.

Guide to Encrypting a PDF, Step by Step
Five steps to a locked copy.
-
1. Choose your PDF
Pick the document you want to lock with Choose file. One PDF is protected at a time.
-
2. Set the password
Type it in Password, then again in Confirm password. It must be at least 4 characters. Switch on "Show passwords" to check for typing mistakes.
A strong password:
- 12 characters or more
- Three or four unrelated words work well
- Not your name, phone number or date of birth
-
3. Add an owner password (optional)
This second password controls the permissions. Leave it blank and one is made for you from your password, so readers cannot quietly lift your restrictions.
-
4. Choose reader permissions
Under "What readers may do", switch each action on or off.
Print the documentCopy text and imagesEdit and annotate
-
5. Protect and download
Press Protect PDF. The locked copy downloads with "-protected" in its name. Store the password somewhere safe, because it cannot be recovered.

What Does PDF Encryption Mean?
A protected PDF is encrypted: its contents are scrambled so that only someone with the right password can turn them back into readable pages. This tool uses AES-256, a widely trusted standard supported by Adobe Reader, browsers and phone PDF apps.
PDF protection has two parts. The open password (called the user password) is needed to view the file. The owner password controls permissions such as printing, copying and editing. Permissions depend on the reader app respecting them, so the open password is the part that truly keeps people out.

- Business plans and quotes
- Exam papers before the exam
Why Protect a PDF With a Password?
Emails get forwarded, laptops get lost and chats get screenshotted. A password makes sure a file only opens for the people you have told.

- Only the right people can open it
- Control over printing
- Discourage unwanted edits
- Help with privacy obligations
- Strong AES-256 encryption
- Control over copying text

Tips for Strong PDF Passwords
-
Longer beats clever. Four random words make a password that is easy to type and hard to guess.
-
Send the password by a different route from the file, such as a phone call or text message.
-
Save the password in a password manager. A forgotten password cannot be reset or recovered.
-
Keep an unprotected original in a safe place for your own use.
-
Treat print and copy restrictions as polite requests. The open password is what actually keeps strangers out.
-
For a group, agree a password format in advance, such as a PAN or date of birth pattern, the way banks do for statements.
Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about this tool.
Can I lock a PDF with a password at no cost?
Choose the file, type the password twice, set the permissions you want and press Protect PDF. The locked copy downloads right away. There is no cost and no account.
How secure is the protection?
The file is encrypted with AES-256, a standard trusted by banks and governments. With a long, uncommon password it cannot practically be broken. A short or obvious password is the weak point, not the encryption.
What happens if I forget the password?
The file cannot be opened, and there is no reset. Nothing about your password is stored anywhere. Keep the unprotected original or save the password in a password manager.
What is the owner password?
It is a second password that controls permissions such as printing and copying. If you leave it blank, one is created from your open password, so a reader cannot use the open password alone to remove your restrictions.
Can I stop people printing or copying my PDF?
Yes. Switch off "Print the document" and "Copy text and images". Adobe Reader and most other readers respect these settings, though some tools ignore them, so rely on the open password for real secrecy.
Will the protected PDF open on phones?
Yes. Android and iPhone PDF viewers and browsers support AES-256 and will ask for the password when the file is opened.
Does protecting a PDF change its content or size?
Once opened with the password, every page looks exactly as before. The file size shifts only slightly, because a small block of encryption details is added.
Is the document or password sent anywhere?
No. Neither the file nor the password is transmitted. Encryption takes place in this tab, and the locked copy goes straight into your downloads.
How do I remove the password later?
Use Unlock PDF on this site with the password you set. It saves an unlocked copy that opens without one.
How long should the password be?
The tool needs at least 4 characters, but aim for 12 or more. A phrase of several unrelated words is both strong and easy to remember.
Is Protect PDF free to use?
Yes. Locking PDFs here is free, needs no registration, and your document leaves with nothing added except its new password.
Is it safe to password-protect a PDF in a browser?
Yes, because the file never leaves your device. The password is applied inside the browser tab and nothing crosses the internet, so neither the document nor the password can be seen by anyone else.
Can Unlock PDF open a file if I forgot the password?
No. It removes a password only when you type the correct one. It is meant for your own files that you open often, not for getting into documents you are not allowed to read.
Does Protect PDF send my files or text anywhere?
No. The work happens inside this browser tab, and nothing is uploaded. That is the whole point for sensitive papers: a redacted or protected file should not pass through a stranger’s server first.
