How to Repair a Corrupted PDF File
A PDF can break when a download stops halfway, an email attachment is mangled, a USB stick is pulled out too early or a program crashes while saving. The reader then complains the file is damaged, or opens it with blank pages.
Very often the page content is fine and only the file’s internal index is broken. This tool reads the file in a forgiving way, rebuilds that structure and saves a fresh copy. If the whole document cannot be rebuilt in one go, it copies the pages across one at a time and skips any that are beyond saving.
There are no settings to learn. Choose the file, press the button and see how many pages came back. The repair runs on your own device, so a damaged contract or statement never has to be sent to a stranger’s server.

Steps to Fix a Broken PDF
Four steps, with nothing to configure.
-
1. Choose the damaged PDF
Select the file that will not open. If the tool can read it, the name, page count and size appear. If not, you can still go ahead.
-
2. Press Repair PDF
The tool first tries to rebuild the whole document at once, which keeps everything intact. If that fails, it recovers pages one by one and shows its progress.
-
3. Read the result
A message tells you how many pages were recovered and shows the size before and after. If nothing could be read at all, the tool explains that in plain words and hands you no broken download.
-
4. Open the repaired copy
The repaired file downloads with "-repaired" in its name. Open it, page through it, and compare it with what you expected before deleting any older copy.
-
5. Carry on with other tools
Once the repaired copy opens, you can compress, merge, sign or split it here like any healthy PDF. Keep the damaged original until you are sure nothing is missing.

What Does PDF Repair Do?
Every PDF has a table near its end that tells a reader where each page, font and picture sits inside the file. When a file is cut short or altered, that table points to the wrong places and readers give up, even though most of the content is still there.
Repair means reading the file without trusting the damaged table, finding the pages that are still whole, and writing them into a new, correctly organised PDF. It cannot invent content that was never saved or that was overwritten, so a badly cut file may come back with fewer pages.

Common causes of damage
- Interrupted downloads
- Broken email attachments
- Faulty USB drives and cards
- Crashes while saving
- Files damaged in transfer
- Badly written exports
Why Repair a PDF Instead of Starting Over?
The original may be gone, the sender may be unreachable, or recreating the document would take hours. Recovering what is still readable is often the fastest way back to a usable file.
“A file that will not open is not always a file that is lost.”
- Get back pages you thought were lost
- A file that opens cleanly again
- Private files stay on your device
- A clear count of recovered pages
- Faster than recreating the document
- No need to ask for a resend
- Partial rescue when full repair fails
- Free to try

PDF Repair Features
Two recovery attempts, from the gentlest to the most determined.
Whole-file rebuild

Recovered page count
You see how many pages came back, so you know at once whether anything is missing.
Before and after size
The result shows the original and repaired sizes side by side.
Clear failure messages

Tips for Recovering Damaged PDFs
-
If the file came from a website or email, try downloading it again first. A fresh copy is better than any repair.
-
Keep the damaged original. Different tools can recover different things, so do not delete it after one try.
-
Compare the recovered page count with the number of pages you expected.
-
Password-locked files should go through Unlock PDF before you attempt a repair.
-
A file of only a few kilobytes that should be much bigger is probably cut short. Missing pages cannot be rebuilt from nothing.
-
Once repaired, the copy works normally in Merge, Compress and the other PDF tools.
Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about this tool.
Can every corrupt PDF be repaired?
No. The tool fixes damage to the file’s structure, which is the most common kind. If the page content itself was lost, overwritten or never saved, no tool can bring it back. You will be told how many pages were recovered.
Why does my PDF say it is damaged?
Usually the internal index that locates each page is broken, most often after an interrupted download, a failed save or a bad copy. The pages themselves are frequently still intact, which is why repair often works.
Some pages are missing after the repair. Why?
Those pages could not be read, so they were skipped rather than stopping the whole rescue. This happens when a file was cut short. If you can get the original again, download or copy it once more.
Will the repaired file look the same?
Pages that are recovered keep their text, pictures and layout as they were. The file may be a slightly different size because its structure has been rewritten.
What does "damaged beyond what can be repaired" mean?
The tool could not find a readable PDF structure at all. The file may not be a real PDF, may be almost empty, or may be too badly damaged. Check the file size and try getting a fresh copy.
Can it repair a password-protected PDF?
Take the lock off first: open Unlock PDF, type the password you were given, download the open copy, then bring that copy here for repair.
Can I repair a PDF on my phone?
Yes. A damaged attachment saved on a phone can be fixed right there: open this page in the mobile browser, select the file and press Repair PDF.
Is my file uploaded for repair?
No. The rebuild is carried out by the browser tab itself, so a broken contract or statement is not shared with anyone during the rescue.
Is there a size limit?
There is no fixed limit. Larger files need more memory, so very big documents are handled best on a computer.
Is Repair PDF free?
Yes. Every repair attempt is free, you do not need an account, and the pages that come back are exactly as they were, with nothing added.
How much smaller will my PDF get?
It depends on what is inside. PDFs full of photos or scans often shrink a lot, while files that are mostly text are already small and change little. The compressor never hands back a file larger than the one you gave it.
Will compressing reduce the quality?
Pictures inside the PDF are made lighter, so very close zooming may show a little softness. Text stays sharp because it is not an image. For exam portals, pick the target size the form asks for and check the result before uploading.
Does Repair PDF work on a phone?
It does. Open the page in your phone’s browser, pick the file from your downloads or files app and save the result. Heavy scans can take longer because a phone has less memory than a laptop.
Can text recognition read handwriting?
OCR works best on clear, printed text in a good scan. Handwriting, faded copies and very small print are often read with mistakes, so check names and numbers in the result before relying on them.
