How to Compare Two Word Documents Online
A contract comes back from the other side, a thesis chapter returns from a supervisor, or a colleague sends “final_v3.docx” without saying what changed. Hunting for edits by eye across two long versions wastes an afternoon and still misses things. This tool pulls the text out of two .docx files and marks every added and removed line.
Put the original on the left and the revised copy on the right, then press Find the differences. Additions are shown in green, removals in red, and counters tell you how many of each there are. Arrow buttons jump from one change to the next.
Both documents are opened by your own browser. Nothing is posted to a server, which matters for legal drafts, HR letters and unpublished research.

Steps to Find Changes Between Word Files
-
1. Add the original document
Drop the earlier .docx into the Original box, or click it to choose the file.
-
2. Add the changed version
Put the newer .docx into the Changed version box. Older .doc files need saving as .docx in Word first.
-
3. Press Find the differences
The text of both files is read and compared paragraph by paragraph. A summary shows the number of additions and removals, or says the two are identical.
-
4. Step through the changes
The arrow buttons beside the counter hop from one change to the next. Switch between Split and Unified layout, and tick Hide unchanged lines to see only the edits.
-
5. Save a record if needed
Download .diff saves the comparison as a standard patch file. Swap sides reverses which document counts as the original.

What Does Comparing Word Files Check?
The comparison looks at the words. Each paragraph of the document becomes a line, and the two sets of lines are matched up so that inserted, deleted and edited paragraphs stand out. Within a changed line, the altered words or characters are highlighted.
Formatting such as bold, fonts, colours and page layout is not compared, and neither are images, headers or footers. That keeps the focus on what the document says, which is usually what a reviewer needs to know.
Why Compare Files Side by Side?
Reading two versions by eye is slow, and small changes slip past even careful readers. A comparison puts both copies next to each other and marks every added, removed and changed line, cell or word, so nothing gets missed.
“The change you do not notice is the one that causes trouble later.”
- Every change marked in colour
- Catch edits before you sign
- Check data after an import
- Both files stay on your device
- No more reading line by line
- Spot quiet changes in contracts
- Review code before it goes live
- Proof that nothing else changed

Tips for Document Comparison
-
Accept or reject tracked changes in Word before comparing, so each file holds one clean version of the text.
-
Tick Ignore capitals when you only care about wording and a colleague has changed heading styles.
-
Hide unchanged lines on a long report so you read only the edited passages.
-
If the tool says the .docx has no readable document inside it, open it in Word and save it again as a fresh .docx.
Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about this tool.
How do I compare two Word documents for differences?
Drop the original .docx on the left and the new one on the right, then press Find the differences. Every inserted and deleted paragraph is marked, with changed words highlighted inside each line.
Does it compare formatting changes?
No. Only the text is compared. A paragraph that was made bold but kept the same words counts as unchanged. For formatting review, use Word’s own Compare feature under the Review tab.
Can I compare old .doc files?
The older .doc format cannot be read in a browser. Resave it in the newer format from any word processor you have, then compare that fresh copy.
Are my documents uploaded?
No. A .docx is a ZIP package, and this page unpacks both packages locally in the tab. Neither document is sent anywhere, so confidential drafts stay private.
Can I compare a Word file with a PDF?
Not on this page, which expects two .docx files. Use the PDF comparison tool for two PDFs, or save the Word file as a PDF first so both are the same type.
Is Compare Word Documents free, and do I need an account?
Yes. It costs nothing, and there is nothing to sign up for. Open the page, add your two files or paste two blocks of text, and the differences appear. There is no trial period and no limit on how often you compare.
Can I compare two different formats, like a PDF and a Word file?
Each compare tool is built for one kind of file, such as PDF, Excel, JSON or plain text. To compare across formats, convert one of them first, or copy the text of both into Compare Text.
How big can the files be?
There is no fixed cap. Everything runs in your browser, so very large files depend on how much memory your device has. A laptop handles bigger files than an older phone, and closing other tabs can help.
Will Compare Word Documents show formatting changes as well as text?
It depends on the tool. Most compare tools focus on content, such as words, lines, cells or values, because that is where meaningful changes hide. Compare PDF Visually is the one to use when the look of the page matters.
