How to Create a Robots.txt File for Your Site
A robots.txt file sits at the root of a website and tells search engine crawlers which paths they may read. Get it wrong and you can hide a whole shop from Google. Get it right and crawlers stop wasting time on admin screens and internal search results.
This generator writes the file from four simple answers: your sitemap address, whether everything is allowed, which paths to block, and whether AI training crawlers should be asked to stay away. The file updates on screen as you change anything, so what you see is exactly what you save.

Steps to Build Your Robots File
-
1. Enter your sitemap URL
Replace the example address with the full link to your own sitemap, such as https://yoursite.com/sitemap.xml. Clear the box if you do not have one.
-
2. Decide what to allow
Leave 'Allow everything' ticked for a normal public site. It adds an Allow: / line that welcomes every crawler.
-
3. List the paths to block
Type folders to keep crawlers out of, separated by commas, for example /admin, /cart, /search. Each one becomes its own Disallow line.
/admin/cart/checkout/search
-
4. Copy or download robots.txt
Tick the AI crawler option if you want it, then press Copy or Download. Upload the file to the top folder of your site so it opens at yoursite.com/robots.txt.
What Is a Robots.txt File?
It is a plain text file of rules for web crawlers, following the Robots Exclusion Protocol. Each group starts with a User-agent line naming which crawler it applies to, followed by Allow and Disallow lines listing paths. A Sitemap line at the end points crawlers to your full list of pages.
The rules are a request, not a lock. Well-behaved crawlers such as Googlebot and Bingbot follow them, but nothing stops a badly behaved bot from ignoring the file, and anyone can read it.
Why Use Web Development Tools in the Browser?
Small web jobs like minifying CSS, checking HTML, escaping a string or writing a Dockerfile rarely deserve a new install. These tools do each one in a tab, and your code is never sent to a server.
“The fastest tool is the one already open in a tab.”
- Code checked for errors
- Messy code made readable
- Number bases converted
- Selectors and paths tested
- Minified files for faster pages
- Config files from templates
- CI workflows drafted quickly
- Source code stays private
Popular Uses for Developer Utilities
These are the small tasks that interrupt a day of web work.
- Minifying assets Shrink CSS or JSON before deploying, then beautify it again to read.
- Validating markup Catch unclosed tags and syntax errors in HTML, CSS or JavaScript before publishing.
- Docker setups Draft a Dockerfile, Docker Compose file or .dockerignore for a new project.
- CI pipelines Generate a GitHub Actions or GitLab CI workflow and adjust it to fit.
- Number conversions Convert between binary, decimal, hex and octal while reading low-level data.
- Selector testing Try a CSS selector or JSONPath expression against sample input and see matches.
- Data URIs Turn a small image into a data URI to embed directly in CSS.
- Project files Create .gitignore, EditorConfig and CODEOWNERS files without copying them from old repos.
What This Robots.txt Generator Gives You
Live file preview
The robots.txt text redraws with every change, so there is no separate generate step and no surprise in the download.
Optional AI crawler block
One tick adds Disallow rules for GPTBot, ChatGPT-User, CCBot, anthropic-ai, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended and PerplexityBot.
The common mistake explained
A note on the page explains that blocking a URL does not remove it from search results, and what to use instead.
Copy or save as a file
Copy the text straight into your hosting panel, or download a ready-named robots.txt to upload by FTP.

Tips for a Safe Robots.txt
-
Never list a secret folder here to hide it. The file is public, so a Disallow line tells everyone that the path exists. Protect private pages with a password.
-
To take a page out of Google, let it be crawled and add a noindex tag. A blocked page can still be listed from links elsewhere, just without a description.
-
Unticking 'Allow everything' only drops the Allow line. To block the whole site, type / into the paths box.
-
Do not block the folders that hold your CSS and JavaScript. Google needs them to see your pages the way visitors do.
-
After uploading, open yoursite.com/robots.txt in a browser to confirm the live file matches what you copied.
Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about this tool.
Where do I put the robots.txt file?
In the root folder of your domain, so it opens at https://yoursite.com/robots.txt. Crawlers only look there. A file placed in a subfolder, such as /blog/robots.txt, is ignored completely.
Will blocking AI crawlers stop my content being used?
It asks the named crawlers to stay away, and the major ones say they honour it. Nothing enforces the request, though, and a crawler not on the list is not covered. The generated file even says so in a comment.
Does robots.txt remove a page from Google?
No. It stops Google reading the page, but the address can still appear in results if other sites link to it. To remove a page, allow crawling and add a noindex meta tag, then wait for Google to revisit.
Do I need a robots.txt file at all?
Not strictly. A site with no robots.txt is treated as fully open. Adding one is still worth it to point crawlers at your sitemap and to keep them away from carts, admin pages and internal search results.
Is anything about my site sent to ToolXkit?
No. The file is written in your browser from the answers you type. Your sitemap address and blocked paths stay on your device until you choose to upload the file to your own hosting.
Is my code sent to a server when I use Robots.txt Generator?
No. Your code is processed in the browser tab, so private repositories, keys in config files and client work stay on your machine. It also means the tool works on locked-down work laptops where installing software is not allowed.
Will minifying break my code?
Minifying removes spaces, comments and line breaks without changing what the code does. Keep an unminified copy for editing, and test the minified version before deploying it.
Are the generated config files ready to use?
They give you a sound starting point based on common settings. Every project is different, so read through the file and adjust paths, versions and secrets before committing it.
Is Robots.txt Generator free with no account?
Yes. There is no login, API key or usage cap. Open the page whenever you need it, even on a machine that is not your own.
Does Robots.txt Generator follow current web standards?
The validators and generators follow current web standards and common tool conventions. Standards keep moving, so for edge cases check MDN or the official specification listed in further reading.
