How to Remove a PDF Password Online
Bank statements, salary slips, insurance papers and e-tickets often arrive locked with a password such as your date of birth or part of your PAN. That is fine for sending, but annoying when you open the same file every week, want to merge it with other papers, or need to upload it to a portal that refuses protected PDFs.
This page makes a clean copy of the file without the lock. You type the password you already know, the tool opens the PDF with it, and it saves a fresh copy that asks for nothing. Pages, text, links and form fields stay as they were.
It cannot guess or break a password you do not have, and no honest tool can. What it does is save you from typing the same code again and again, all inside your browser, so the document and the password never travel anywhere.

Unlock Your PDF in Six Short Steps
It takes under a minute. Keep the password ready before you begin.
-
1. Open the Unlock PDF tool
You will find it just above this guide. Any current browser will do, whether on a desktop computer or a handset, with no app to add.
-
2. Pick the locked PDF
Tap Choose file, or let the statement fall onto the dashed box. This page takes one PDF per run.
Good to know:
- Only your own browser opens it; no server sees it.
- Your original PDF is left untouched on your device.
-
3. Type the password
Enter the password you use to open the file in the Password box. Capital letters, spaces and symbols must match exactly.
Common passwords on Indian documents:
- Date of birth as DDMMYYYY
- First four letters of your name plus birth year
- Customer ID or policy number
- Check the email that came with the file
-
4. Press Remove password
The tool opens the PDF with your password and writes a new copy without any encryption. If the password is wrong you see a clear message and can try again.
-
5. Save the unlocked copy
The new file downloads with "-unlocked" added to its name. Open it to check: it should open with no prompt and let you print and copy text.
-
6. Store it sensibly
An unlocked statement can be read by anyone who gets the file. Keep it in a private folder, and delete it from shared computers when you are done.

What Is a Password-Protected PDF?
A PDF can carry two kinds of lock. An open password scrambles the contents, so no reader shows a single page until the right code is typed. A permissions password is lighter: the file opens, but the reader is told to block printing, copying or editing.
Unlocking means saving the document again without that scrambling or those flags. The words and pictures do not change. Only the gate in front of them is taken away, which is why you need the key to begin with.
Locked PDF
.PDFA document wrapped in encryption that asks for a password, or blocks printing and copying.
Why people remove a PDF password
- Bank and card statements
- Salary slips and Form 16
- Insurance policy papers
- Merging with other files
- Portals that reject locked files
- Printing without prompts
- Keeping an easy archive
Why Take the Password Off Your PDF?
A password is useful while a file is in transit. Once it is safely on your own device, typing it every time is just friction, and many other tools and websites cannot handle a protected file at all.
“Keep the lock for the journey, then take it off at home.”
- Open the file with one tap
- Upload to visa and loan portals
- Copy figures into a spreadsheet
- Share with a CA or family member
- Merge or split it with other PDFs
- Print without being blocked
- Sign or fill it in other tools
- Search old statements later
Popular Uses for the Unlock PDF Tool
Locked files of these kinds turn up here again and again.
- Monthly bank statements Remove the date-of-birth lock so a year of statements can be merged into one file for a loan or visa application.
- Payslips and Form 16 Hand your tax documents to an accountant without also having to send the password in a separate message.
- Insurance documents Policy schedules and claim letters often come locked. An open copy is easier to print for a hospital desk.
- Tickets and bookings Some travel and event confirmations are protected. Unlock them so they open quickly at a gate or counter.
- Company reports Take the password off an internal report you own before combining it with other chapters.
- Print-blocked files A PDF that opens but will not print usually has only permission flags. Removing them lets it print normally.
- Copy-blocked text Clear the copying restriction on your own document so you can paste a paragraph into an email.
- Personal archives Keep a searchable folder of old statements that your computer can index without asking for codes.

Best Times to Unlock a PDF
Removing the password makes sense when you are:
- Uploading to a site that refuses locked files
- Joining several statements into one
- Printing a file that keeps blocking you
- Sending papers to your accountant
- Building a searchable archive
- Signing or annotating your own document
- Copying numbers into a spreadsheet
- Opening the same file many times a week
Tips for Unlocking PDFs Safely
-
Look in the email or SMS that came with the file. Banks usually state the password pattern there.
-
Passwords are case-sensitive. If your name is part of it, try capital letters as well as small ones.
-
Only remove protection from files that belong to you or that you have permission to change.
-
If you must email the unlocked copy, consider adding a new password with the Protect PDF tool first.
-
Keep the original locked file too, in case you ever need proof of what the sender issued.
-
On a shared or office computer, delete the unlocked copy from Downloads when you finish.
-
Open the new file once before you delete anything, to confirm it opens without a prompt.
Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about this tool.
How do I remove a password from a PDF?
Choose the PDF on this page, type the password you normally use to open it, and press Remove password. A copy called yourfile-unlocked.pdf downloads, and it opens without asking for anything.
Can I unlock a PDF if I forgot the password?
No. This tool needs the correct password. Strong PDF encryption is designed so that nobody can read the file without it, and any site claiming instant recovery is either guessing very slowly or not being truthful. Ask the sender for the password or a fresh copy.
My PDF opens but I cannot print or copy. What do I do?
That file has permission restrictions rather than an open password. The Password box hint says such files need no password, so leave it empty and press Remove password. Check the saved copy prints before you delete the original.
Is it legal to remove a PDF password?
Removing a lock from your own document, such as your bank statement or payslip, is normal. Removing protection from someone else’s file without permission may break their terms or the law, so only unlock papers you have the right to change.
Is my password sent to a server?
No. The password is used by code running inside your browser tab to open the file there. Neither the PDF nor the password leaves your device, and nothing is kept once the tab is closed.
What is the password for my bank statement PDF?
It varies by bank. Many Indian banks use your date of birth in DDMMYYYY form, or a mix of the first letters of your name and your birth year or customer ID. The email that delivered the statement normally explains the pattern.
Why does it say the password was not accepted?
The password typed does not match the one the file was locked with. Check for capital letters, an extra space, or a different date format such as DDMMYY instead of DDMMYYYY, then try again.
Will unlocking change the content or quality?
No. The same pages, text and pictures are saved again without encryption. Pages are not flattened into pictures, so text remains selectable and the quality is identical to the original.
Can I unlock a PDF on my phone?
Yes. Open this page in Chrome on Android or Safari on iPhone, pick the statement from your email app or Files, type the password and save the copy. It works the same as on a computer.
Can I unlock several PDFs at once?
This page handles one file at a time. For a batch of statements with the same password, run each one in turn; each takes only a moment because nothing has to upload.
Can I unlock a very large PDF?
There is no upload limit because nothing is uploaded. The practical ceiling is the memory in your device. Ordinary statements and reports are no trouble; a very large file may be slower on an older phone.
How do I put a password back on later?
Use the Protect PDF tool on this site. You can set a new password and choose whether readers may print, copy or edit. It also runs in your browser.
Is it safe to password-protect a PDF in a browser?
Yes, because the file never leaves your device. The password is applied inside the browser tab and nothing crosses the internet, so neither the document nor the password can be seen by anyone else.
Can Unlock PDF open a file if I forgot the password?
No. It removes a password only when you type the correct one. It is meant for your own files that you open often, not for getting into documents you are not allowed to read.
