How to Redact a PDF Properly
Drawing a black rectangle over a line of text feels safe, but in most editors the words are still there underneath. Anyone can select them, copy them or remove the box. Many real leaks started that way.
This tool does it differently. You list the words or phrases to hide, or tick patterns such as email addresses and card numbers, and every match is listed with a tick box so you can keep any that should stay. You can also drag a box over a photo, stamp or signature on the page picture. Each affected page is then rebuilt as a picture with those spots painted solid, and the remaining text is added back as an invisible layer so the file stays searchable. The removed text is not carried into the new file at all.
Your document is read and rebuilt inside the browser. A file full of personal details never leaves your device, which is the whole point of redacting it.

Step-by-Step Guide to Redact PDF Text
Five steps to a copy that is safe to share.
-
1. Choose the document
Pick the PDF that holds the private details. A password field appears if it is locked. For a scan with no text, the tool says so, and you draw boxes by hand instead of searching.
-
2. List words to remove
In "Words and phrases to remove", put one item on each line. Any piece of text that contains one of them is blacked out.
Examples:
- A person’s name, such as Priya Raman
- A company or client name
- An account or policy number
- A reference prefix like 2024-INV-
-
3. Tick patterns to catch
Under "Or remove anything that looks like", press the patterns you want. You can use them alone or together with your list.
Email addressesPhone numbersCard numbersNational ID / SSNBank account / IBAN
-
4. Check the matches and draw boxes
Every match appears on the page picture and in a list with tick boxes. Untick anything that should stay. Drag on the page to cover a signature or photo, and use Previous and Next to move between pages.
Also set:
- Match case, to hide "Rose" but keep "rose"
- Search these pages: all, or only some like 1-3
- Box colour: black or white
-
5. Redact and download
Press Redact PDF. A copy ending in "-redacted" downloads, and a short message reports the number of areas removed and the pages they were on. If nothing is ticked and no box is drawn, no file is made and you are told why.

What Is PDF Redaction?
Redaction means removing sensitive information from a document before it is shared, so the reader can see that something was taken out but cannot recover it. Courts, governments and companies use it for names, identity numbers, bank details and anything else that should stay private.
Real redaction deletes the information. Covering it with a shape, changing its colour to white or cropping it away only hides it. This tool rebuilds each affected page without the removed words, so there is nothing left to select, copy or search for. Pages with nothing to remove stay exactly as they were.

Tips for Safe PDF Redaction
-
Open the redacted copy and read every page before you share it. Check for spellings you did not list, like initials or short forms.
-
Add each variant of a name on its own line: full name, surname alone, and any nickname.
-
Numbers such as Aadhaar or PAN are best typed in exactly. The ID pattern is shaped for 9-digit national numbers and may not catch them.
-
A scanned PDF has no text to search. Draw boxes by hand, or run OCR PDF first so the word search can find things.
-
The search only finds typed text. Cover photos, stamps and handwritten notes by dragging a box over them.
-
Redacted pages become pictures with a text layer, so links and fillable form fields on those pages do not carry over. Keep the original for your own records.
-
Scroll the list of matches before you press the button, and untick anything that should stay visible.
Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about this tool.
Is the redacted text really gone?
Yes. Each page is rebuilt as an image with black bars painted where the matches were, and only the remaining words are added back as searchable text. The removed words are not in the new file, so they cannot be copied, searched or uncovered.
How is this different from a black box in an editor?
A box drawn in most editors sits on top of the text, which is still in the file. Selecting and pasting the area often reveals it. This tool leaves the text out of the new page altogether.
Can I redact a scanned PDF?
Yes, by drawing boxes. A plain scan is just a picture, so the word search finds nothing and a note on screen says as much. Drag a box over each private area on the page picture. For word search on a scan, run OCR PDF first.
Can I black out images or signatures?
Yes. Press and pull across the page picture to draw a box over a photo, logo, stamp or signature. The area is painted over for good in the saved file. Each box has a small cross to remove it if you drew it by mistake.
Why does it say nothing matched?
The words were not found as text on any page. Check the spelling, try turning off Match case, or check whether the file is a scan with no text layer.
Will the redacted PDF look different?
Pages look the same apart from the bars. Pages that had something removed are now pictures, so very small print on them may be slightly softer when zoomed right in, and their links and form fields are not kept. Other pages are untouched.
Does it catch Indian phone numbers and emails?
The email pattern catches standard addresses. The phone pattern finds a mobile number written as one block, such as 9876543210, and many grouped styles. A number split into two groups of five, like 98765 43210, can slip past it, so add such numbers to your word list too.
Can I redact only one page?
Yes. Under Search these pages, choose Only some pages and type the page, such as 4. Or keep all pages and untick the matches on other pages in the list. Hand-drawn boxes only cover the page you drew them on.
Can I use white boxes instead of black?
Yes. Set Box colour to White. The removed area is then painted white, which suits forms and printouts where a black bar would look heavy. The words are deleted either way.
Does the sensitive file get sent to ToolXkit?
No. Reading, blacking out and rebuilding all take place in your browser. The file never goes to a server, which is exactly what you want for sensitive papers.
Can I black out text from my mobile?
Yes, Chrome and Safari on phones both handle it. Since each page is redrawn as a picture, a long statement is noticeably quicker on a laptop than on a handset.
Is Redact PDF free?
Yes. Blacking out text here is free, needs no login, and adds nothing but the black bars you asked for.
Is it safe to password-protect a PDF in a browser?
Yes, because the file never leaves your device. The password is applied inside the browser tab and nothing crosses the internet, so neither the document nor the password can be seen by anyone else.
Can Unlock PDF open a file if I forgot the password?
No. It removes a password only when you type the correct one. It is meant for your own files that you open often, not for getting into documents you are not allowed to read.
