How to Open a ZIP File Without Software
Someone sends you a .zip and your computer at work will not open it, or your phone just shows a grey icon. You only want the three PDFs inside, not a lesson in archive software. This page opens the ZIP for you and lists its contents in a table you can read.
Pick the file and the tool shows each entry with its name and size, the total size once unpacked, and how much space the archive saved. Type in the filter to find one file among hundreds, switch to a folder tree, then save a single file with its Save button or take everything with Extract all.
Reading happens locally in this tab. No server ever receives the archive, and that counts when it holds bank statements, contracts or someone else’s personal details.

Unzip Your File in Five Steps
All five steps take place in the extractor box above.
-
1. Open the ZIP Extractor
You are on it now. It works in any current browser on a laptop, desktop, tablet or phone, and there is no app to download first.
-
2. Choose the ZIP file
Click or tap the dashed box and pick your archive from the file window. The name and size appear in the box once it is loaded.
Files it opens:
- .zip archives
- Word .docx, Excel .xlsx and PowerPoint .pptx (these are ZIPs inside)
- .epub e-books, .jar and .apk packages
-
3. Look at what is inside
A summary shows the format, the number of entries, the unpacked size and the percentage saved. Below it, every file is listed with its name and size. Switch between List and Tree to see the folders.
-
4. Find a file by name
Type part of a name in the "Filter by name" box, such as "invoice" or ".pdf", and the list narrows as you type. This is the quickest way through an archive with hundreds of entries.
-
5. Save one file or all
Press Save beside any file to download just that one, with its original name. Press Extract all to get every file at once, delivered as a fresh ZIP named after the original with "-extracted" added.
What Does a ZIP Extractor Do?
A ZIP extractor reads the index stored at the end of a ZIP archive, which lists every file inside, and then unpacks the compressed data back into the original files. Unpacked files are identical to the ones that went in; nothing is lost.
Many everyday formats are secretly ZIP archives. A Word .docx, an Excel .xlsx and an EPUB book are folders of XML and pictures zipped together, which is why this tool can open them too and let you save, say, every image from a Word document.
ZIP Archive
.ZIPA container of compressed files and folders, read back into the originals on your device.

Why Extract ZIP Files in the Browser?

“See what is in the parcel before you open all of it.”
- No software to install
- Save single files only
- Archive never leaves your device
- Tree view of folders
- See contents before extracting
- Useful on phones and tablets
- Filter long lists by name
- Opens Office files and e-books too

This tool helps most when you are:
- On a computer where you cannot install software
- Trying to open a ZIP on a phone

Tips for Unzipping Safely
-
Read the file names before extracting. A "document.pdf.exe" is a program, not a PDF, and should not be opened.
-
On a phone, use Save on individual files rather than Extract all, so you do not end up with a second ZIP to open.
-
Filter by extension, such as ".jpg", to pick out all the photos in a mixed archive.
-
Switch to Tree when the archive has many folders. It is easier to see where things live.
-
Password-protected ZIPs cannot be opened here. Ask the sender for an unprotected copy, or use desktop software.
-
To get the original photos out of a .docx, open it here and look in the word/media folder.
-
Huge archives are happier on a laptop, since the whole thing is held in memory while you look.
Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about this tool.
How do I open a ZIP file without WinZip or WinRAR?
Click the dashed box on this page, choose the ZIP and its contents appear in a list. Press Save next to any file to download it, or Extract all for everything. Your browser does the unpacking, so nothing needs installing.
How can I unzip files on Android or iPhone?
Open this page in Chrome or Safari, tap the box and pick the archive from your Downloads folder. Tap Save beside the file you want, and it downloads on its own. This works on Android phones and iPhones.
Why does Extract all give me another ZIP?
A browser is not allowed to create folders on your computer, only single downloads. So the tool unpacks everything and packs it again into one clean ZIP. To get loose files, use the Save buttons, or unzip that download with your computer’s built-in tool.
Can I extract just one file from a ZIP?
Yes. Every file row has a Save button. It downloads only that file with its original name, which is quicker and uses far less space than unpacking the whole archive.
Can it open password-protected ZIP files?
No. Encrypted ZIPs cannot be read here, and the tool tells you so when you pick one. Ask the sender for a copy without a password, or use desktop software that asks for the password.
Does the ZIP get sent anywhere when I open it?
No. The archive stays with you and is unpacked in the browser tab. ToolXkit never receives its contents, and closing the tab clears everything from memory.
Can I open RAR or 7z files here?
This page is set up for ZIP and ZIP-based files. ToolXkit has separate RAR Viewer and 7z Viewer pages for those formats, and a TAR Extractor for .tar and .tar.gz archives.
How do I get pictures out of a Word document?
Choose the .docx file here. Word files are ZIP archives, so the list shows a folder called word/media that holds every picture at its original quality. Press Save beside each image you want.
What does "% smaller as an archive" mean?
It compares the ZIP’s own size with how much room its contents need once unpacked. A figure of 70% means the files take roughly three times more space after extraction, so check you have room first.
Is there a size limit?
We set no maximum. Opening happens in working memory, which a computer has far more of than a phone. If a huge ZIP fails on your mobile, try the same file on a PC.
Why does it say the ZIP could not be read?
Usually the download was cut short, the file is password-protected, or it is not really a ZIP despite its name. Try downloading it again, and ask the sender to check the file opens on their side.
Does ZIP Extractor upload my files?
No. Files are opened locally by the page itself. Even when you unpack an archive or hash a large download, the contents stay on your machine and are not transmitted to any server.
Can I open a RAR or 7z file without installing anything?
Yes. RAR Viewer and 7z Viewer show what is inside and let you save the files you need, all from the browser. This helps on office computers where you cannot install an unzip program.
What is a checksum and why check one?
A checksum is a short code worked out from a file’s contents. If your copy gives the same code as the one the publisher lists, the file arrived complete and unchanged.
