Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about this tool.

How do I decide between the old and new tax regime?

It turns on how much you genuinely claim in deductions. The new regime has lower rates and almost no deductions; the old has higher rates but allows 80C, HRA, home loan interest and the rest. Enter your figures under both — the calculator shows each slab-by-slab, so you can see the crossover for your own numbers rather than relying on a general rule.

What does slab-by-slab mean?

Income tax is not one rate on your whole income. Each slab is taxed at its own rate and only the portion falling inside it, so moving into a higher slab never reduces your take-home pay. Seeing the breakdown is the quickest way to understand why a raise that "pushes you into the next bracket" is still a raise.

Does this include cess and surcharge?

Health and education cess is applied on the computed tax, and surcharge where the income thresholds are crossed. Both materially change the final figure at higher incomes, which is why a calculation that stops at the slab rates understates what is actually payable.

How accurate is Income Tax Calculator?

It uses the standard formula for the calculation, so the maths is exact for the numbers you enter. For loans, tax and investments, treat the answer as a close estimate and confirm the final figure with your bank or adviser.

Does Income Tax Calculator save the numbers I enter?

No. Your figures are worked out in the browser and are not sent to any server or stored in an account. Salary, loan and health details stay on your device.

Are the income tax calculators up to date?

They are built on the slabs published by the Income Tax Department for the year shown on each page. Rules change with each Budget, so confirm the figures on the official portal before you file.

Can I rely on these calculators for health decisions?

They are good for a quick check, such as BMI or daily calories. They are not a medical diagnosis, so talk to a doctor before changing medicine, diet or treatment based on a result.

Do I need to install an app?

No. Every calculator runs in the browser on your phone or computer, with no download and no sign-up. Bookmark the page if you use it often.
