How to Rename Multiple Files at Once

Bulk File Renamer: before and after TEXT A YOUR INPUT BULK FILERENAMER DONE A RESULT

Holiday photos called IMG_4012.jpg, scanned pages named Scan 1, Scan 2, or exam documents that all need a roll number in front: renaming them one by one is tedious. This tool applies the same rules to a whole batch, shows you every new name before anything happens, and hands you the files back in a ZIP.

Find and replace text, add words before or after each name, change the case, number the files in order or change the extension. A web page is not allowed to rename files on your disk, so you download a ZIP containing copies with the new names instead.

Steps to Batch Rename Files

  1. 1. Choose the files

Click Choose the files to rename and select them all at once. Numbering follows the order they appear in the preview table.

  2. 2. Set the renaming rules

Fill in any of Find, Replace with, Add before, Add after, Change extension to and Case. Leave a box empty to skip that rule.

  3. 3. Add numbers if needed

Tick Number them to add -001, -002 and so on to each name, and set Starting at if the count should begin elsewhere.

  4. 4. Check the preview

The Now and After table shows every old and new name side by side. Changed names are shown in green.

  5. 5. Download the ZIP

Press Download the renamed files as a ZIP. Extract it to get the renamed copies; the originals on your disk are untouched.

What Is a Bulk File Renamer?

A bulk renamer applies the same naming rules to many files in one go. Here the rules run in a fixed order: find and replace, then case, then the text added before and after, then the number, then the new extension. The part after the last dot is treated as the extension and left alone unless you change it.

Why Use File and Archive Tools?

A ZIP from a colleague, a download with no extension or a folder full of badly named files can stop work for a while. These tools unpack, identify, hash and rename files inside your browser, so nothing is uploaded to find out what it is.

“Know what a file is before you open it.”
  • Archives opened without software
  • Downloads checked with hashes
  • Duplicate files found
  • Big files packed smaller
  • Unknown files identified
  • Files renamed in bulk
  • Folders compared quickly
  • Contents never leave your computer

Popular Uses for ZIP and File Tools

These tools help with the small file puzzles that come up every week.

  • Opening RAR files See and extract what is inside an archive on a computer with no unzip program.
  • Checking a download Compare a file’s SHA-256 checksum with the one on the download page.
  • Mystery files Find the real type of a file that has lost its extension or has the wrong one.
  • Renaming photos Rename a folder of camera photos with dates or numbers in one go.
  • Clearing duplicates Find repeated files taking up space in a downloads or photos folder.
  • Sending many files Pack several documents into one ZIP so they travel as a single attachment.
  • Comparing folders See which files differ between a backup folder and the working copy.
  • Reading file details Check a file’s size, dates and hidden metadata before sharing it.

What the Batch Renamer Can Do

Find and replace

Swap a word or code in every name, such as IMG_ for Goa-2026-, matching the exact text and capitals you type.

Prefix, suffix and case

Add text before or after each name, and convert names to lowercase or UPPERCASE.

Sequential numbering

Three-digit numbers are added from any starting value, keeping files in a neat order.

New extension

Change .jpeg to .jpg or .txt to .csv on every file at once, without changing the contents.

Clash protection

If two files would end up with the same name, a warning appears and the download waits until you fix it.

Tips for Renaming Files in Bulk

  1. Always read the After column before downloading. It is quicker to adjust a rule than to rename files again.

  2. Turn on numbering whenever you replace the whole name, otherwise every file would get the same name.

  3. Find matches capitals exactly. IMG will not match img, so copy the text straight from a file name.

  4. The ZIP holds copies. Delete or move the old files afterwards if you want only the renamed set.

  5. Changing an extension does not convert a file. Renaming a .png to .jpg leaves it a PNG inside.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about this tool.

How do I rename many files at once for free?

Select the files on this page, set rules such as a prefix, find and replace or numbering, check the preview and download the ZIP. No app needs installing on your computer.

Why do I get a ZIP instead of renamed files?

For your safety, web pages cannot change files on your disk directly. The tool therefore packs copies with the new names into a ZIP. Extract it wherever you want the renamed files.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Reading and zipping both take place inside this tab. Photos, scans and documents stay private, and large batches depend only on your device’s memory.

Can I add numbers to file names?

Yes. Tick Number them and each file gets a hyphen and a three-digit number at the end, starting from 1 or the number you choose. Files are numbered in the order shown in the Now and After table.

What happens if two files end up with the same name?

A red warning lists the clash and the download button is disabled, so no file overwrites another in the ZIP. Turning on numbering is the quickest fix.

Can I open a RAR or 7z file without installing anything?

Yes. RAR Viewer and 7z Viewer show what is inside and let you save the files you need, all from the browser. This helps on office computers where you cannot install an unzip program.

What is a checksum and why check one?

A checksum is a short code worked out from a file’s contents. If your copy gives the same code as the one the publisher lists, the file arrived complete and unchanged.

Is there a size limit in Bulk File Renamer?

It depends on your device rather than on the site. Everything is processed in memory in the browser, so a computer handles bigger archives and folders than a phone does.

Is Bulk File Renamer free to use at work?

Yes. It is free for personal and work use with no account. Because files stay on the machine, it also fits workplaces that do not allow uploading documents to outside sites.
