How to Convert CSV to Excel XLSX
Banks, websites and apps hand you data as CSV: a statement download, an order export, a list of form responses. Double-clicking it can squash every row into column A, drop the zeros off the front of PIN codes and account numbers, or turn codes like 1-2 into dates.
This converter reads the CSV itself, works out whether it is separated by commas, semicolons or tabs, and writes a proper .xlsx file with one value per cell. Press Convert to Excel and a workbook named after the CSV arrives, ready to sort, filter and share.
Everything is done in your browser. Statement exports and customer lists are not copied to an online converter, and you do not need Excel installed to create the file.

Make an XLSX from Your CSV in Four Steps
Four quick steps, then an optional check.
-
1. Open the CSV to Excel tool
You are on it now. Any recent browser runs it, on a desktop, a tablet or a handset, with no Office licence required.
-
2. Choose your CSV or TSV
Tap the pick button, or drop the file into the dashed area. Files ending in .csv, .tsv and .txt are accepted, as long as the text is laid out as rows with a separator.
-
3. Let the separator be detected
There is nothing to set. The tool recognises commas, semicolons and tabs on its own, so European and tab-separated exports come out in proper columns.

4. Press Convert to Excel
A workbook with one sheet downloads as an .xlsx named after your CSV, and a line of text confirms how many rows were written.
-
5. Open and check the workbook
Open the file in Excel, Google Sheets or LibreOffice Calc. Scroll to the last row and glance across a few columns to confirm every value landed in the right place.

What is the Difference Between CSV and XLSX?
A CSV is plain text: one line per row, with commas or another character between the values. It has no idea what a column width, bold heading or number format is, and every program has to guess how to read it.
An XLSX is Excel’s own workbook format, a packaged file that stores each cell separately along with sheets and formatting. Converting gives you a file that opens identically everywhere, with every value in its own cell, instead of relying on each program’s guesswork.

Why Convert CSV to XLSX?
A CSV that looks fine on your screen can fall apart on someone else’s, depending on their region settings. An XLSX fixes the columns in place, keeps codes intact and gives your recipient a file they can work with immediately.
“Send a workbook, not a puzzle.”
- One value per cell, guaranteed
- Semicolon files split correctly
- Ready to sort and filter
- No import wizard needed
- Leading zeros kept
- Opens the same everywhere
- Better for emailing to others
- Exports kept private

Tips for Smooth CSV Conversion
-
Open the CSV in Notepad first if you are unsure what it contains. One header line and consistent separators give the cleanest result.
-
Numbers arrive exactly as written in the CSV. If Excel flags them with a small green corner mark, use Convert to Number on that column before totalling.
-
Mixed separators in one file confuse any detector. Export the CSV again from its source if columns look wrong.
-
Add filters and freeze the header row in Excel after converting, so a long statement is easy to browse.
-
Keep the original CSV. Some upload screens need it back in CSV form later.
-

Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about this tool.
How do I convert a CSV file to Excel?
Choose the CSV on this page and press Convert to Excel. The separator is detected automatically, and a matching .xlsx downloads straight away, ready for any spreadsheet program.
Why does my CSV open in one column in Excel?
The file probably uses semicolons or tabs, and Excel expected commas because of your region settings. Converting it here detects the real separator, so the XLSX opens with each value in its own column.
How do I keep leading zeros when opening a CSV?
Convert it here rather than double-clicking it. Codes such as 007, PIN codes and account numbers are kept exactly as written in the CSV, instead of being turned into numbers that lose their zeros.
Can I convert CSV to XLSX without Excel?
Yes. The workbook is created in your browser, so Excel does not need to be installed. You can make the .xlsx on a Chromebook, a phone or any shared computer.
Is my CSV file uploaded to a website?
It is not. The CSV is read and the workbook written inside this browser tab, and our servers never see either file, which is why bank statements and customer exports are safe to convert here.
Can I convert a TSV or tab-separated text file?
Yes. Files ending .tsv and .txt are accepted, and tab separators are detected automatically, just like commas and semicolons. Each tab-divided value lands in its own column of the new workbook.
Why do numbers show a green triangle in Excel?
Every value is carried over character for character, which protects codes and leading zeros, so Excel may regard some number columns as text. Highlight the column, open the little warning menu, and pick the option to turn text into numbers before totalling.
Can I merge several CSV files into one Excel workbook?
This page converts one CSV at a time into a workbook with one sheet. To combine several files, use our Merge Excel tool, which can stack them into one sheet or give each file its own sheet.
Is there a row limit?
We do not set one. Large CSVs of many thousands of rows convert fine on a computer, and only available memory holds you back. Excel itself holds at most about a million rows per sheet.
Will commas inside a value break the columns?
Not if the value is in double quotes, as CSV exports normally do. "Kumar, S" stays in one cell. If a system wrote commas without quotes, the columns will shift, and the file needs exporting again.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. On Android or iPhone, choose the CSV from your downloads and press Convert to Excel. Any spreadsheet app on the phone can then open the new .xlsx.
Do I need Excel installed to use CSV to Excel?
No. The spreadsheet is read by the page itself, so it works on computers without Microsoft Office, and on phones and tablets too. The result downloads in the format you picked.
Can CSV to Excel handle files with thousands of rows?
Usually, yes. Sheets with thousands of rows work well on most devices. Very large files depend on your computer’s memory, so a laptop copes better than an older phone.
Will formulas survive the conversion?
Formats like CSV, JSON and XML store values, not formulas, so a converted file holds the calculated results. Keep your original workbook if you will need the formulas again.
