How to Number PDF Pages Online
Page numbers make a long document usable. Examiners refer to them, printers need them to collate, and anyone discussing a report on a call can say "look at page 14" instead of "the one with the blue chart". Many PDFs exported from phones and scanners arrive without any.
This tool adds them in a few choices. Tap a square on a three-by-three position grid, choose a format such as 1, Page 1 of 10, or i, ii, iii (or write your own, like Chapter 2 · {n}), and set where counting starts. You can skip the cover page, choose a font and size, pick any colour and decide how far from the paper’s edge the number sits.
A picture of your page shows the number in place, and you can step through the pages to check each one. A card also shows the first and last label, for example "Page 2 of 40 … Page 40 of 40". Press Add page numbers and the numbered copy downloads, while your original file stays unchanged on your device.

Adding Page Numbers in Seven Steps
Choosing a file and pressing the button is enough; every setting in between starts on a sensible default.
-
1. Choose your PDF
Bring in the PDF with a drag, or through Choose file. Once loaded, the hint under the Pages box states its length.
-
2. Say which pages get numbers
Leave the Pages box empty to number all pages, or type a range such as 3-20 to number only part of the document.
-
3. Pick a position
Tap one of the nine squares: top, middle or bottom, each on the left, centre or right. For a book printed on both sides, switch on "Facing pages" so even pages use the mirror spot and numbers stay on the outer edge.
-
4. Choose the format and start
Select how each number looks and what the first one should be.
11 of 10Page 1Page 1 of 10- 1 -i, ii, iiia, b, c
Extra choices:
- "Your own text" takes any words, with {n} for the number and {total} for the total.
- Start numbering at any number from 1 upward.
- Skip the first page to leave a cover unnumbered, and choose whether it still counts.
- For "of N" formats, choose whether N is every page or only the numbered ones.
-
5. Set the look
Pick one of seven fonts, set Text size anywhere from 7 to 36 pt, choose a colour by swatch or by typing a code like #1d4ed8, and set the distance from the edge in millimetres.

-
6. Check the preview
The page picture shows the number where it will print, with arrows to move between pages. Below, a card gives the first and last label and how many pages will carry a number.
-
7. Press Add page numbers
Your copy saves as the original name plus "-numbered". A short line then reports the count of labelled pages.

What Are PDF Page Numbers?
Page numbers are small labels printed on each page to show its place in the document. In a PDF they are drawn onto the page itself, so they appear in every reader, on every device and on paper.
This tool draws the numbers as real text on top of the existing page. Nothing underneath moves or changes, and the numbers use fonts every PDF reader already has, so they look the same everywhere.

Why Documents Need Page Numbers
Numbers let people find, cite and discuss pages quickly. They also protect you: when pages are printed and dropped, or a reviewer says something is missing, numbered pages show exactly where each sheet belongs.
“A numbered page can always find its way back.”

- Reliable collating after printing
- Meets submission rules
- Works with a contents page
- Easy to refer to a page
- Missing pages spotted quickly

Popular Uses for Page Numbering
Documents that nearly always need numbered pages.
- Theses and dissertations Skip the title page and number the rest, or use roman numerals for the front matter.
- Court and legal bundles Number every page so parties can refer to the same sheet in a hearing.
- Annual reports Add "Page 3 of 48" footers so readers always know how far they have come.
- Tender documents Number every sheet of a bid, as many tender rules demand.
- Manuals Give a handbook numbers that match its table of contents.
- Board packs Let everyone at the meeting turn to the same page at once.
- Documents for binding Make sure a print shop can put loose sheets back in sequence.
- Claim files Number supporting receipts so an assessor can list what was sent.

When to Number Your Pages
Numbering earns its keep whenever you are:

- Finishing a file made by merging
- Matching a table of contents
- Reviewing a document with others
Tips for Neat Page Numbers
-
Keep the distance from the edge at about 10 mm or more if the file will be printed.
-
Use 9 to 11 pt for footers. Bigger numbers distract from the content.
-
A dark grey reads well without shouting. Pure black can look heavy on light pages.
-
For a thesis, number the front matter with i, ii, iii in one pass, then the main body with 1, 2, 3 in a second pass using a page range.
-
Merge and organise first, then number, so the sequence is right.
-
Check the corner you choose is empty on your pages. Numbers are drawn on top and do not replace an existing footer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about this tool.
How do I insert page numbers into a PDF?
Choose your PDF, pick a position on the grid and a format, then press Add page numbers. The numbered copy downloads straight away. Every other setting is optional.
Can I start numbering from a number other than 1?
Yes. Type any number in "Start numbering at". This is useful when the PDF continues from an earlier volume or part.
How do I skip the cover page?
Switch on "Skip the first page". Page 2 then shows your starting number. Turn on "First page still counts" as well if page 2 should show 2, as if the cover were numbered.
Can I use "Page 1 of 10" style numbers?
Yes. Choose "1 of 10" or "Page 1 of 10". By default the total is every page in the file; switch on "Count only the numbered pages" to make it the last number printed.
Can I use roman numerals?
Yes. Choose "i, ii, iii" for lower-case roman numerals, handy for prefaces and front matter. There is also "a, b, c" for letters.
Can I number only some pages?
Yes. Type a range such as 5-30 in the Pages box. Only those pages get numbers, and the first of them shows your starting number.
Will the numbers cover my content?
They are drawn on top of the page at the spot you chose. If that corner already has text or an old footer, pick another position or change the distance from the edge.
Will my text still be selectable?
Yes. The original page content is not changed, and the numbers are added as real text rather than an image.
Can I number pages from my mobile?
Yes. All the controls, including the position grid and colour picker, work on a touch screen, and the numbered PDF saves to your phone.
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The numbers are written into the file by your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere, and your original stays as it was.
Can I number a password-protected PDF?
A print or copy restriction is removed quietly when the file loads, so numbering carries on. A document locked with an open password triggers a notice instead; run Unlock PDF, type the password, then return here with the opened copy.
What fonts can I use?
Helvetica, Times and Courier, each in regular or bold, plus Times italic. These are built into every PDF reader. If your own text uses Tamil, Hindi or another Indian script, a matching font is added for those letters.
How do I put numbers on the outer edge for a printed book?
Pick a left or right corner, then switch on "Facing pages (mirror left and right)". Odd pages use the spot you chose and even pages the opposite side, so every number sits on the outside when the book is bound.
Can I change words that are already in the PDF?
These tools add to the page: text, numbers, stamps, borders, headers or watermarks. Rewording what is already printed on a PDF is not their job, so for heavy rewriting, edit the original document if you still have it.
