Joining Several PDFs Into One File

Merge PDF Online: before and after PDF A BEFORE MERGE PDF PDF A AFTER

Sooner or later everyone ends up with a pile of separate PDFs that belong together: a cover letter and a CV, three bank statements for a loan, the chapters of a thesis, or every scanned page of a rental agreement. Sending five attachments is clumsy, and the person receiving them has to work out the order themselves.

This merger puts them into one file. Pick your PDFs, and every page appears as a small picture on a board. Drag pages into the right order, even from one file into the middle of another, turn or delete any single page, and press Merge PDFs. The pages are copied across exactly as they are, so text stays crisp and selectable, pictures are not squeezed a second time, and each page keeps its own size.

Nothing goes to a server. Your own browser reads the PDFs, joins them where they already are, and the finished document drops into your usual downloads folder.

Combine Your Documents in Six Steps

Six short steps take you from a folder of loose files to one tidy PDF.

  1. 1. Open the Merge PDF tool

The merger is the box just above this guide. Any up-to-date browser will do, and it behaves the same whether you are on a work PC, a Mac, an Android handset or an iPad.

  2. 2. Add at least two PDFs

Press Choose files and select your documents, or drag them onto the dashed box. You can come back and add more at any time, and each new file joins the bottom of the list.

    Good to know:

    • PDFs plus JPG, PNG and WebP photos are accepted. A photo becomes one page.
    • A file with an open password shows a box to type it in.
    • With just one file picked, the tool reminds you to add one more.
  3. 3. Put the pages in order

The file list has up and down arrows and a Sort A–Z button for whole files. Below it, the page board shows every page with a coloured tag for its file. Drag any page to a new spot, across files if you like. On a phone, hold the dotted handle.

  4. 4. Turn or delete single pages

Each page on the board has its own rotate left, rotate right and Delete page buttons, plus a magnifier for a large preview. Two buttons above the board turn every page at once, Reset undoes your changes, and the red cross in the file list drops a whole file.

  5. 5. Press Merge PDFs

A progress line names each file as it is added. Large documents may take a few seconds, and a Cancel button lets you stop halfway if you change your mind.

  6. 6. Save the combined file

The new PDF downloads by itself, named after your first file with "-merged" on the end. Afterwards a summary lists the total page count and compares old and new sizes, with a button to fetch the file again.

What Does It Mean to Merge PDFs?

Merging takes the pages of several PDF documents and places them one after another inside a single new PDF. The first file’s pages come first, then the second file’s, and so on down your list.

A good merge does not redraw anything. Each page is lifted across whole, with its text, fonts, pictures and page size, so a scanned A4 sheet and a landscape slide can sit side by side in the finished document without either one being stretched.

Merged PDF

.PDF

Several documents, one after another, inside one file you can send or print in one go.

Common reasons to merge

  • Cover letter plus CV
  • Statements for a loan file
  • Assignment chapters
  • Monthly bills and invoices
  • Signed contract pages
  • Proposal with appendices
  • One print job instead of many

Why Combine PDFs Into One?

One file is easier for everyone. It attaches once, opens once, prints in one go, and nobody has to guess which part comes next or whether a page went missing on the way.

“Send one document, not a folder of pieces.”
  • A single email attachment
  • One print job
  • Portals that take only one file
  • Easier to read on a phone
  • A fixed reading order
  • Neater records and backups
  • Less chance of a missing page
  • A more organised impression

Popular Uses for Merge PDF

Joining files comes up in study, work and family paperwork alike.

  • Job applications Put the cover letter, CV and certificates into the single file an application form asks for.
  • Loan and visa papers Join salary slips, bank statements and ID pages in the order the bank or embassy lists them.
  • College submissions Combine a title page, chapters and references written in different places into one report.
  • Expense claims Gather every receipt and invoice for a month behind the claim form.
  • Signed agreements Rebuild a contract after each party has signed and scanned their own pages.
  • Client proposals Attach the price sheet, case studies and terms after the main proposal.
  • E-books and notes Collect lecture handouts or downloaded chapters into one file to read offline.
  • Print shop orders Hand the shop one document so pages come out in the right sequence.

Merge PDF Features

Small, practical features that make joining files quick to get right.

Order

A board of every page

Drag single pages anywhere, even between files, and see a coloured tag showing which file each page came from.

Sorting

Sort A–Z in one press

Files named in sequence line up instantly, with numbers read the way people read them.

Handy for:

  • Scan-001, scan-002…
  • Chapter 1 to Chapter 12
  • Dated statements
Quality

Pages copied, not redrawn

Text stays selectable and searchable, and images keep the exact quality they had before.

Sizes

Mixed page sizes kept

A4, Letter, legal and landscape pages each keep their own shape in the finished file.

Photos

Photos as pages

Add JPG, PNG or WebP pictures next to your PDFs. Each becomes a page, and a phone photo keeps its right way up.

Locked files

Password box built in

Files that only block printing or copying open straight away. For one that needs a password, type it in the box that appears and it joins the board.

On the board you can:

  • Rotate one page or all
  • Delete a page
  • Preview a page large

Tips for a Clean PDF Merge

  1. Name files 01, 02, 03 before you start, then press Sort A–Z and the order is done for you.

  2. Scroll the page board once before merging. It is quicker than fixing the order afterwards.

  3. Unwanted pages? Press Delete page on each one right on the board, then merge.

  4. If the joined file is too big for an email or portal, run it through Compress PDF afterwards.

  5. If a file asks for a password, type it in the box that appears. You will need to know that password.

  6. A sideways scan can be put right on the board with the rotate buttons under that page.

  7. Want page numbers across the whole bundle? Add them after merging so they run from start to finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about this tool.

How do I merge PDF files for free?

Choose two or more PDFs on this page, drag the pages on the board into order (or use Sort A–Z), and press Merge PDFs. Your joined PDF is saved immediately. You pay nothing, skip any login, and no logo is added.

How do I combine PDFs on my phone?

Load this merger in the browser your handset came with, press Choose files and select the PDFs from your downloads or file manager. Arrange them, press Merge PDFs, and the joined document lands in your phone’s downloads.

Will merging reduce the quality of my PDF?

No. The merger lifts each page across in one piece instead of drawing it again, which keeps lettering sharp and selectable and leaves photos at their earlier quality. The combined file is usually close to the total size of the files you started with.

Can I change the order of the files?

Yes. Each file in the list has up and down arrows, and Sort A–Z arranges them by name. The page board follows that order until you start dragging single pages yourself.

Can I rearrange individual pages while merging?

Yes. Every page sits on the board as a small picture. Drag it anywhere, including into the middle of another file, turn it with the rotate buttons, or press Delete page to leave it out. Reset puts everything back.

Can I merge a password-protected PDF?

Bank statements and government forms often carry a print or copy restriction without any open password; those join the list and merge like ordinary files. If a document truly cannot be viewed without its password, a password field appears. Enter it once and the pages join the board. The merged file itself has no password.

Is there a limit on files or pages?

There is no fixed cap. Since the joining is done by your own device, its memory sets the practical limit. A computer handles long documents more comfortably than an older phone.

What happens to different page sizes?

Each page keeps its own size and orientation. An A4 letter, a US Letter form and a landscape slide can all sit in the same merged file without being stretched or cropped.

Do my PDFs get sent to a server?

No. The PDFs are read and joined by your own browser, and the result goes straight to your downloads. No part of them crosses the internet, so private papers remain yours alone.

Can I merge images or Word files here?

Photos, yes. JPG, PNG and WebP pictures can be added next to your PDFs, and each one becomes a page sized to match A4. Word files are not accepted, so turn them into a PDF with Word to PDF first.

Do bookmarks from the original files survive?

Every page arrives intact, but bookmark lists from the separate files are not carried into the merged document. If you need a clickable outline, add it afterwards in a desktop PDF editor.

What is the merged file called?

It takes the name of the first file in your list with "-merged" added, for example report-merged.pdf. The source documents keep their names and contents.

Will Merge PDF lower the quality of my PDF?

No. Rearranging, rotating, splitting or joining pages does not re-compress the text or pictures inside them, so they look as sharp as before. Tools that change the layout, such as booklets, scale the pages without redrawing their contents.

Can I use Merge PDF on a phone or tablet?

Yes. It works in Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox on phones and tablets as well as computers. Long documents take longer on a phone, but the steps and the result are the same.
