How to Convert PDF to Excel Free
Retyping a price list, bank statement or marks sheet from a PDF into Excel is tedious and easy to get wrong. One slipped digit can throw off a whole total.
This converter looks at where each word sits on the page, spots the columns that line up, and writes the rows into cells of an Excel workbook. For documents that are mostly text, a second layout puts every line into its own row instead.
All of it runs in your browser. Statements, salary slips and invoices never leave your own machine, an important point when the figures are personal or a client’s.

Steps to Get PDF Tables Into Excel
Choose a layout, decide how pages map to sheets, and convert.
-
1. Add the PDF with tables
Select the statement, invoice or report from your files. It should be a PDF with real text, such as one exported from software or a bank website.
-
2. Pick the layout
Leave Layout on "Detect tables" for statements, price lists and reports with columns. Choose "Every line as a row" when the PDF is mostly sentences and you just want the lines in cells.
-
3. Choose one sheet or many
By default each PDF page becomes its own sheet, named Page 1, Page 2 and so on. Tick the option to put every page on one sheet when a table runs across several pages.
-
4. Press Convert to Excel
The pages are read one by one and a progress bar shows how far along it is. A message then says how many tables and sheets were made.
-
5. Open the .xlsx
The workbook downloads under your PDF’s name. Open it in Excel, Google Sheets, Numbers or LibreOffice Calc and check the columns before you rely on the figures.

What Is PDF to Excel Conversion?
A PDF shows a table as words placed in neat columns, but it has no idea that those words belong to cells. Excel stores the same information as a grid of rows and columns that can be calculated.
Converting from PDF to Excel means working out the grid from the positions of the words: which words start at the same distance from the left edge, and which sit on the same line. The result is an .xlsx workbook, the standard format used by Excel since 2007.

Tips for Accurate Excel Output
-
If you cannot select the words in your PDF viewer, it is a scan. Use OCR PDF first, then convert.
-
Cells arrive as text. In Excel, select a column of numbers and use Convert to Number before adding them up.
-
Check columns on the first page. Wrapped cells and merged headings are where things most often shift.
-
For a statement over many pages, tick the one-sheet option, then delete the repeated header rows.
-
If Detect tables gives odd results, try Every line as a row and split columns with Text to Columns in Excel.
-
In table mode, lines holding a single word may be skipped. Compare row counts with the PDF for important data.
-
A statement that asks for a password on opening needs Unlock PDF, with that password, before it will convert.
Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about this tool.
How can I turn PDF tables into Excel at no cost?
Add your PDF above, keep Layout on Detect tables, and press Convert to Excel. An .xlsx workbook downloads with the tables placed in rows and columns. You pay nothing and never create an account.
Will the table formatting be kept?
The rows and columns are rebuilt, but colours, borders, fonts and merged cells from the PDF are not. You get clean data in a plain grid that you can format in Excel however you like.
Will a scanned table convert?
Not straight away, because a scan holds an image of the table and no actual characters. Our OCR PDF tool can recognise the characters first; convert its output here and double-check every figure afterwards.
Why are my numbers stored as text in Excel?
Figures are copied exactly as they appear, including commas and symbols, so Excel treats them as text. Select the column, click the small warning icon and choose Convert to Number, or use Find and Replace to remove currency signs first.
Can I put all pages on one sheet?
Yes. Tick "Put every page on one sheet instead of one sheet per page" before converting. Everything lands on a single sheet named Extracted, which is handy for long statements.
What if no tables are found?
You will see a message suggesting the other layout. Switch to "Every line as a row" and convert again. Each line of the PDF then goes into its own row, which you can split with Text to Columns.
Does it work with bank statements?
Yes, as long as the statement was downloaded from online banking as a text PDF. Statements with a password to open need unlocking first. Check the rows against the PDF before you rely on the totals.
Can I open the file in Google Sheets?
Yes. Upload the .xlsx to Google Drive and open it with Google Sheets, or use File then Import inside Sheets. Numbers, LibreOffice Calc and WPS also open it.
Is my PDF uploaded to your server?
No. Reading the PDF and writing the workbook both happen locally, inside this page. We never receive the statement, and neither does anyone else.
Is there a page limit?
There is no set limit. Long PDFs simply take longer, and the practical ceiling is your device’s memory. Hundreds of pages are usually fine on a computer.
Why did some columns shift?
Columns are worked out from where words start on the page. Cells that wrap onto two lines, merged headings or ragged alignment can push values across. Fix a few cells by hand, or try the line-by-line layout.
Can I turn a PDF into Excel on my phone?
Yes. Pick the PDF from your phone, convert, and open the .xlsx in the Excel or Google Sheets app. Very long files are quicker on a laptop.
Will PDF to Excel keep my tables and layout?
Text and simple tables usually come across cleanly. Pages with columns, sidebars or heavy design may need some tidying afterwards, because a PDF stores positions on the page rather than a structure. Always glance through the result.
Can a scanned PDF be converted?
A scan is a picture of text, so ordinary conversion finds little to copy. Run the scan through OCR PDF first to add a text layer, or use Scan to Word, then convert as usual.
