How to Split a PDF Into Separate Files

Split PDF Online: before and after PDF A BEFORE SPLIT PDF PDF A AFTER

Long PDFs are awkward to share. A college portal wants each chapter as its own upload, a client only needs the invoice from a forty-page pack, and an email server rejects the whole thing as too large. Splitting cuts the document into the parts people actually need.

You get three ways to do it. "Every page as its own file" turns a ten-page PDF into ten one-page PDFs. "Every few pages" cuts it into equal chunks, say three pages each. "Into ranges I choose" gives you rows with a From and a To page box, one row per part, and a coloured File tag on each page picture shows where every part begins.

Pages are copied, not redrawn, so each part looks exactly like the original with selectable text and unchanged pictures. Two or more parts arrive together in a single ZIP so your downloads folder stays tidy. With ranges you can instead ask for all of them in one PDF.

Splitting a PDF, Step by Step

The whole job takes under a minute for most documents.

  1. 1. Choose the PDF to split

Drop the document onto the dashed box, or tap Choose file. Once it has been read, a line gives its page total and size, and a small picture of every page appears. A locked file shows a password field first.

  2. 2. Decide how to split it

Under "How to split it", pick one of the three options. The page pictures update straight away to show which file each page will land in.

Every page as its own fileInto ranges I chooseEvery few pages

  3. 3. Set the ranges or the page count

For ranges, each row has a first and last page box. Press + Add a range for another row, or the red button to drop one. For every few pages, type how many pages each file should hold and the tool tells you how many files that makes.

    Examples:

    • Rows 1 to 3 and 4 to 6 give two files
    • Every few pages set to 5 cuts 20 pages into four files
    • Pages outside every range are left out
    • Under What to download, pick one ZIP of parts or all ranges in one PDF
  4. 4. Press Split PDF

Progress shows which part is being written, for example "Writing part 3 of 12". A Cancel button appears while it works.

  5. 5. Collect your files

Several parts download together as one ZIP named after your document with "-split" added. A single part comes back as a plain PDF, and "All ranges in one PDF" gives one file ending in "-ranges".

  6. 6. Open the ZIP

Most phones and computers open a ZIP with a tap or double-click. Single pages are named page-001, page-002 and so on. Other parts are numbered 01, 02, 03 and also name their pages, like 01-pages-1-3.

What Is PDF Splitting?

Splitting is the opposite of merging. You start with one PDF and end with several, each holding a chosen slice of the original pages. Your source PDF is not altered in any way.

Because each page is copied whole into its new file, nothing is re-scanned or re-compressed. Fonts, links on the page, images and page sizes all come through unchanged, and each part is only as large as the pages it contains.

Split parts

.ZIP

Several smaller PDFs, one per page or per range, bundled into one download.

Why people split PDFs

  • Submit chapters separately
  • Pull one invoice from a pack
  • Get under an email size limit
  • Share only the relevant pages
  • Upload forms one by one
  • File scanned batches properly
  • Hand out single slides

Why Split PDF Documents?

Smaller, focused files are easier to send, easier to upload and easier for the reader. They also stop you sharing pages that were never meant for that person.

“Give each reader just the pages they asked for.”
  • Smaller attachments
  • Meets per-file upload rules
  • Cleaner filing
  • Original quality kept
  • Less oversharing
  • Faster to open and read
  • Easy to hand out parts
  • One page per file when needed

Popular Uses for PDF Splitter

Some of the everyday reasons a document needs cutting up.

  • Government forms Break a combined application into the individual documents an office wants.
  • Legal bundles Send a witness or client only the exhibit that concerns them.
  • Slide decks Save single slides as one-page PDFs to share in chat.
  • E-books Cut a large manual into parts that open quickly on a phone.

You see a thumbnail of each page before splitting, with a magnifier for a closer look, so your ranges match the document.

Locked files

Good Times to Split a PDF

Cutting a document up makes sense when you are:

  • Facing a portal with one upload box per document
  • Over an email attachment limit
  • Sharing part of a confidential file
  • Filing invoices that were scanned together
  • Sending a single slide
  • Submitting coursework chapter by chapter
  • Reading a large manual on a small screen
  • Sorting a batch scan into records

Tips for Splitting PDFs Well

  1. Press the magnifier on a page picture to read it large and spot where each section starts before you set the rows.

  2. New rows start one page after the previous row and run to the end, so you often only need to change the last page.

  3. Need scattered pages kept together in one file? "All ranges in one PDF" does that without a ZIP.

  4. If the document has bookmarks for its chapters, Split PDF by Bookmarks does the cutting for you.

  5. Rename the parts after unzipping so the recipient knows what each one holds.

  6. If a single page is still too heavy, pass that part through Compress PDF.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about this tool.

Can every page of a PDF become its own file?

Choose your file, keep "Every page as its own file" selected, and press Split PDF. Each page is saved as its own PDF, and all of them download together in one ZIP.

How can I cut a PDF into chosen page ranges?

Pick "Into ranges I choose". Two rows appear, splitting the file in half. Change the From and To boxes, press + Add a range for more parts, then press Split PDF. Each range becomes one file inside a ZIP.

Will splitting change the quality?

No. Each part receives its pages exactly as they were, so text remains selectable and images are not compressed again. Each part looks the same as those pages did in the original.

Can I split a PDF on my phone?

Yes. Visit the splitter from your handset’s usual browser, pick the document, set the split method and press Split PDF. The Files app on Android or iPhone opens the ZIP so you can see each part.

Why does the split arrive as a ZIP?

When a split produces more than one PDF, they are bundled into one ZIP so you get a single download instead of dozens. If your ranges produce just one file, it downloads as an ordinary PDF.

Can I cut a PDF into equal chunks of 2 or 10 pages?

Choose "Every few pages" and type the number into Pages in each file. The hint under the box says how many files you will get, and the last file holds whatever pages are left over.

Can I split a password-protected PDF?

Files whose only lock is on printing or copying split like any other, because that lock is lifted as the file loads. Where a document refuses to open without its password, you get a field to enter it, and the split then goes ahead as normal.

Is my document uploaded anywhere?

No. Your browser opens the PDF and writes the parts without contacting any server. That makes it a sensible choice for payslips, medical notes and other personal paperwork.

Can I combine several ranges into one file?

Yes. Set your range rows, then under What to download pick "All ranges in one PDF". Rows 1 to 3 and 7 to 7 give one file of four pages, in the order of the rows.

How long a document can the splitter take?

There is no set page or size cap. The splitting uses your device’s memory, so very long documents go more smoothly on a computer than on an older phone.

What are the split files named?

Single pages are named after your document plus page-001, page-002 and so on. Other parts get 01, 02, 03 plus the pages they hold, like 02-pages-4-8. The ZIP carries your file name with "-split" added.

Will Split PDF lower the quality of my PDF?

No. Rearranging, rotating, splitting or joining pages does not re-compress the text or pictures inside them, so they look as sharp as before. Tools that change the layout, such as booklets, scale the pages without redrawing their contents.

Can I use Split PDF on a phone or tablet?

Yes. It works in Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox on phones and tablets as well as computers. Long documents take longer on a phone, but the steps and the result are the same.

Can I rearrange a password-protected PDF?

You need to remove the password first. Use Unlock PDF with the password you already know, then come back and rearrange the pages. None of the tools here can open a file whose password you do not have.
