How to Pull Text Out of a PDF for Free

PDF to Text Online: before and after PDF A PDF FILE PDF TO TEXT TXT A TXT FILE

Copying text out of a PDF by hand is slow and messy. You drag across a page, the selection jumps to the wrong column, and the pasted result is full of odd breaks. Doing that for twenty pages wastes an afternoon.

This converter reads every page of your PDF and writes all of its words into one plain text file, in the order they appear on the page. You can choose to mark where each page ends, which helps when you need to find a passage again in the original.

Your own browser tab does the reading, and the document goes nowhere else, so bank statements, contracts and exam notes can be converted without a second thought.

Steps to Convert PDF to TXT

Four clicks from a PDF to a text file you can edit anywhere.

  1. 1. Add your PDF

Bring the PDF in from your laptop or phone: drag it over the grey panel, or tap Choose file. A line under the panel then reports the page count.

    Good to know:

    • One PDF at a time.
    • Files are read on your device, never sent to a server.
    • A PDF with only a copy or print lock usually opens fine.
  2. 2. Decide on page markers

Leave "Mark where each page ends" switched on to get a clear divider line between pages. Switch it off when you want one continuous block of text, for example to paste into a word counter.

  3. 3. Press Extract text

The tool reads each page in turn and shows its progress. A short document finishes in a moment; a long report may take a little longer on an older phone.

  4. 4. Save the .txt file

The text file downloads with the same name as your PDF. A short message confirms how many characters were taken from how many pages.

  5. 5. Open and use the text

Open the file in Notepad, TextEdit, VS Code, Word or Google Docs. From there you can search it, edit it, quote from it, or paste it into any other tool.

What Is PDF to Text Conversion?

A PDF stores each letter at an exact spot on the page, together with its font and size. That is great for printing but awkward for reuse. Converting to text keeps only the characters themselves, arranged into lines and paragraphs.

The result is a .txt file: the simplest document type there is. It has no fonts, colours or pictures, so it opens on every computer made in the last forty years and is easy for other software to read.

Plain text

.TXT

Just the words from your PDF, in reading order, saved as UTF-8 so accents and other scripts survive.

What people do with the text

  • Edit a document that only exists as a PDF
  • Count the words in a thesis or article
  • Quote a passage in an email or chat
  • Feed a report into a script or database
  • Paste a paper into an AI assistant
  • Make study notes from lecture slides
  • Keep a lightweight, searchable copy

Why Convert PDF to Plain Text?

Plain text is the format every program understands. Once the words are free of the PDF layout, you can search them, change them and move them wherever you need.

“A PDF is made for reading. A text file is made for working with.”
  • Edit words that were locked in a layout
  • Easy to search with any editor
  • Simple for scripts and software to read
  • Works with screen readers and translators
  • A far smaller file than the PDF
  • Opens on every device and system
  • No more copying page by page
  • A copy that will still open decades from now

Popular Uses for PDF Text Extraction

These are the jobs that bring people to a PDF text extractor most often.

  • Study notes Turn lecture handouts and e-book chapters into text you can highlight, trim and reorganise.
  • Resume screening Recruiters pull CV text into a tracking sheet or keyword search without retyping.
  • Contract review Get the clauses of an agreement into an editor so you can compare and comment line by line.
  • AI and chatbots Many assistants accept pasted text more happily than an attachment. Extract first, then paste.
  • Word counts Check the length of a paper that was only shared as a PDF before you submit or pay for editing.
  • Data entry Move names, addresses or reference numbers from a PDF list into another system.
  • Translation Give a translator or a translation website clean text rather than a file it cannot open.
  • Statements and bills Pull transaction lines from a bank or card statement to search for one payment.

What the Text Extractor Does

Simple on purpose, with the few choices that actually matter.

Order

Follows the page layout

Words are grouped into lines from their position on the page, so sentences come out in the order you read them.

Pages

Optional page markers

A clear "page break" line between pages makes it easy to match the text back to the original.

Turn it off for:

  • Word counters
  • AI prompts
  • One long paste
Encoding

UTF-8 output

The file is saved as UTF-8, so Hindi, Tamil, Arabic, Chinese and accented letters stay readable when the PDF stores them properly.

Privacy

Runs in the browser

The PDF is read inside the page itself. There is no upload step, and closing this page wipes every trace of the file.

Locks

Handles copy-locked files

Many PDFs forbid copying but have no open password. Those usually convert without any extra step.

Scans

Honest about scans

If the PDF is only pictures of pages, you get a clear message pointing you to OCR instead of an empty file.

Reasons to Pick Our PDF to TXT Tool

No upload at all

Private papers such as payslips and medical reports are read on your own machine, not on somebody else’s server.

When to Extract PDF Text

Go for a plain .txt copy if you are:

  • Editing a document that you only have as a PDF
  • Pasting a long report into an AI tool
  • Checking a word count before submission
  • Sending a passage to someone by chat
  • Moving a list into a spreadsheet or system
  • Searching many pages for one phrase
  • Reading on a very old or very small device
  • Keeping a tiny backup of a large PDF

Tips for Cleaner Extracted Text

  1. Try selecting a word in the PDF first. If you cannot, the page is a picture and you need OCR, not this tool.

  2. Two-column papers can mix lines from both columns. Check the first page and tidy it before you rely on it.

  3. Keep the page markers on while you work, then remove them with Find and Replace at the end.

  4. If accents or Indian scripts show as boxes, change the font in your editor. The letters are usually there.

  5. When the PDF demands a password just to be viewed, that lock has to come off first. Our Unlock PDF page does it if you know the password.

  6. Pictures, tables and colours never make it into a .txt file. For those, the Word and Excel converters in our PDF section are the better route.

  7. Open the file in a proper editor rather than a browser tab, so long lines wrap and you can save changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about this tool.

How can I get the text out of a PDF without paying?

Add the PDF to the box on this page and press Extract text. A .txt file holding every word of the document is saved to your device a moment later. You will not be asked to pay or sign up, however many files you convert.

Why does the tool say no selectable text was found?

That PDF is a scan or a photo of pages, so it holds pictures of letters rather than real text. Run it through the OCR PDF tool first, which recognises the letters, then extract the text from the result.

Will bold, headings and fonts be kept?

No. A .txt file cannot hold any formatting, so you get the words only. If headings and bold text must survive, convert to a Word document or a web page instead.

Does it keep line breaks and paragraphs?

Each line on the page becomes a line in the file, and pages are separated by a blank line or a page marker. Very long paragraphs may therefore be split across several lines, just as they were on the page.

Can I extract text from a two-column PDF?

Yes, but check the result. The tool groups words into lines by their position, and on some layouts a line from the left column can sit next to one from the right. Single-column documents come out cleanest.

What does "Mark where each page ends" do?

It puts a line reading "page break" between the text of each page. That makes it easy to find where a quote came from. Turn it off if you want the pages to run together.

What if my PDF has a password?

If the PDF only blocks copying or printing, it usually works as normal. If it needs a password just to open, use Unlock PDF with that password first, then come back.

How many pages can it handle?

We set no page cap. Your phone or computer does the reading, so how much it can hold in memory decides the practical maximum. Hundreds of pages are normally fine on a computer; a phone may be slower with very large books.

Can I convert PDF to TXT on my phone?

Yes. On Android or iPhone, open ToolXkit in Chrome or Safari, pick the statement or notes you need, and the .txt file lands in your downloads folder, ready to open or share.

Does my PDF get sent anywhere?

No. The file is opened and read by code running in your browser tab. No part of it travels across the internet, which makes the tool safe for private and confidential documents.

Which languages are supported?

Any language the PDF stores as real text, including Hindi, Tamil, Arabic and Chinese. The output is UTF-8. A few PDFs made by older software store letters in a scrambled form, and those can come out as symbols.

Can I edit the text file afterwards?

Yes. It is an ordinary text file, so Notepad, TextEdit, Word, Google Docs or any code editor will open it for editing, and you can save it under a new name or format.

Will PDF to Text keep my tables and layout?

Text and simple tables usually come across cleanly. Pages with columns, sidebars or heavy design may need some tidying afterwards, because a PDF stores positions on the page rather than a structure. Always glance through the result.

Can a scanned PDF be converted?

A scan is a picture of text, so ordinary conversion finds little to copy. Run the scan through OCR PDF first to add a text layer, or use Scan to Word, then convert as usual.
