How to Scan Documents to PDF With a Camera

Scan to PDF With Your Camera: before and after SCAN A INPUT SCAN TO PDF PDF A RESULT

Not everyone has a scanner at home, and the nearest cyber café is not always open. Your phone camera is usually good enough, as long as the result looks like a scan rather than a holiday snap and ends up as a proper PDF.

Press Start camera and allow access when the browser asks. On a phone the rear camera is chosen for you. Line the page up inside the white frame, press Capture page, then turn to the next sheet. The Document look turns grey paper white and keeps the ink dark, and a brightness slider helps in dim rooms.

Each capture appears below as a numbered thumbnail. Move pages left or right, discard a blurred one, pick A4, US Letter or the photo’s own size, and press the Save button. The file is built in your browser from still frames only; the video is never recorded or sent.

Scan to PDF in Six Steps

Find a flat surface and good light, then follow along.

  1. 1. Start the camera

Press Start camera. Your browser asks for permission; choose Allow. A live picture appears with a white frame to help you line pages up.

    If it does not start:

    • A refusal message means camera access was blocked. Allow it in the browser’s site settings.
    • "No camera was found" means the device has none the browser can use.
  2. 2. Choose the look

Pick how the captured pages should appear, and nudge brightness between 60% and 160% if the room is dark or the paper glares. The look applies to pages captured after you choose it.

  3. 3. Capture each page

Hold the camera straight above the page so it fills the frame, then press Capture page. Put the next sheet down and repeat. The count of captured pages goes up each time.

  4. 4. Sort and discard

Captured pages show as numbered thumbnails. Point at or tap one to reveal its buttons: left and right arrows to move it, and a cross to discard it. Stop camera pauses capturing, and Capture more starts it again.

  5. 5. Pick a page size

Choose the paper each photo is placed on. Every photo is centred and scaled to fit without stretching.

  6. 6. Save as PDF

Press the Save button, which shows the page count, for example "Save 4 pages as PDF". A file named scan.pdf downloads and a note confirms its size.

What Is Scan to PDF?

Scanning to PDF means turning paper pages into a digital document. A flatbed scanner does it with a moving light bar; this tool does it with the camera you already have, taking a still picture of each page and placing it on a PDF page.

The Document look raises contrast so the paper turns close to white and writing turns dark, which is what makes a photo read like a scan. The pages in the PDF are pictures, so the text inside them is not searchable until you run the file through OCR.

When to Scan to PDF

A camera scan is the quickest route when you are:

  • Filling in an online form that wants PDFs
  • Returning a signed document
  • Claiming expenses
  • Handing in written work online
  • Forwarding a paper letter
  • Backing up important papers
  • Saving pages from a book
  • Away from any scanner or printer

Tips for Clear Camera Scans

  1. Scan near a window in daylight, or under an even room light. Avoid your own shadow falling across the page.

  2. Hold the camera straight above the paper, not at an angle, so text lines stay level.

  3. Put white paper on a dark table. The contrast helps you frame the page cleanly.

  4. If the Document look makes faint pencil disappear, try Greyscale or raise the brightness a little.

  5. Choose "Match the photo" to avoid white bands around pages that are not A4 shaped.

  6. Look at each thumbnail before saving and discard any that are blurred.

  7. If the PDF is too large for a portal, shrink it with Compress PDF afterwards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about this tool.

How do I scan a document to PDF with my phone?

Open this page, press Start camera and allow access. Line each page up in the frame and press Capture page. When every page is captured, press the Save button and scan.pdf downloads to your phone.

Is a separate scanning app required?

No. The scanner runs in your web browser. It needs a browser with camera access, which current versions of Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox provide.

Why is my camera not starting?

Usually because permission was refused. Open the browser’s site settings for this page, allow the camera, and press Start camera again. On a device without a camera, the tool says none was found.

Are my pictures uploaded or saved anywhere?

No. The live feed is never recorded. Each capture is a still frame held in this page, and scan.pdf is assembled locally before landing in your downloads.

Can I scan several pages into one PDF?

Yes. Keep pressing Capture page for each sheet in turn. They all go into a single PDF in the order shown, which you can change with the arrow buttons.

How do I make the scan look white and clean?

Use the Document look, which flattens the background to white and darkens writing. Good, even light helps most. The brightness slider can lift a dull capture.

Can I change the look after capturing?

The look and brightness are applied at the moment of capture. To change a page, discard it, adjust the settings and capture it again.

Does the tool crop or straighten pages automatically?

No. It saves the whole camera frame. Fill the white guide with the page and hold the camera level for the best result.

Is the text in the scanned PDF searchable?

No, the pages are images. To make the text searchable and copyable, run the saved file through the OCR PDF tool.

What page size will the PDF be?

A4 by default. You can also choose US Letter, or "Match the photo", which sizes every page to fit its own capture.

Can I use a laptop webcam?

Yes. Any camera the browser can reach works, though a phone’s rear camera usually gives sharper pages than a front-facing webcam.

How much smaller will my PDF get?

It depends on what is inside. PDFs full of photos or scans often shrink a lot, while files that are mostly text are already small and change little. The compressor never hands back a file larger than the one you gave it.

Will compressing reduce the quality?

Pictures inside the PDF are made lighter, so very close zooming may show a little softness. Text stays sharp because it is not an image. For exam portals, pick the target size the form asks for and check the result before uploading.

Does Scan to PDF work on a phone?

It does. Open the page in your phone’s browser, pick the file from your downloads or files app and save the result. Heavy scans can take longer because a phone has less memory than a laptop.
