The result is reflowable — text a reader can resize, not page images — so it works properly on a phone or an e-reader. A PDF stores glyph positions rather than structure, so headings are inferred; clean single-column documents convert best.

How to Turn a PDF Into an Ebook

PDF to EPUB Converter: before and after PDF A PDF FILE PDF TO EPUB EPUB A EPUB FILE

Reading an A4 PDF on a phone means endless pinching and sideways scrolling. The page was designed for paper, so the text stays tiny however you hold the screen.

An EPUB fixes that. The words are free to wrap to the width of the screen, and the reader app lets you change the font size, spacing and background. This tool lifts the words off each page of your PDF, finds headings and paragraphs, and packs them into an EPUB 3 book with a table of contents.

You give the book a title and author and decide how it is divided into chapters. All of this happens locally in the browser tab, and your file stays where it is.

Steps to Make an EPUB From a PDF

Three settings and one button turn a PDF into an ebook.

  1. 1. Add the PDF

Choose the book or document you want to read as an ebook. It needs real, selectable text; a scanned book has to go through OCR first.

  2. 2. Enter title and author

The Book title appears in your reader’s library. Leave it blank to use the file name. The Author box shows Unknown if you leave it empty.

  3. 3. Choose how to split chapters

Chapters become the entries in the book’s table of contents.

At each headingOne per pageOne chapter

    Which one?:

    • At each heading: a new chapter wherever a large heading appears. Best for most documents.
    • One per page: for PDFs with no headings at all.
    • One chapter: the whole text in a single section, good for short pieces.
  4. 4. Press Convert to EPUB

The pages are read, headings and paragraphs are worked out, and the chapters are laid out. A message confirms how many chapters were made.

  5. 5. Open it in your reader

Open the .epub in Apple Books, Google Play Books, Kobo, Calibre or any EPUB app. For a Kindle, send it with Amazon’s Send to Kindle service.

What Is an EPUB File?

EPUB is the open standard for ebooks, looked after by the W3C. Inside, it is a small package of web-style pages plus a list of chapters, so a reading app can flow the text to fit any screen and let you pick the font size.

A PDF is the opposite: every line is fixed to a spot on a page. Converting means lifting the text off those pages, working out which lines are headings, lists and paragraphs, and writing them as reflowable chapters.

Good PDFs to turn into ebooks

  • Novels and stories shared as PDF
  • Study notes and course readers
  • Long reports you want to read on the go
  • Your own manuscript for proofreading
  • Company handbooks and guides
  • Public-domain texts from archives

Why Read a PDF as EPUB?

An ebook adapts to you instead of making you adapt to a printed page. On small screens that difference is huge.

“Reflowable text is the difference between reading and squinting.”
  • Comfortable on phone screens
  • A table of contents to jump around
  • Bookmarks and highlights
  • Usually smaller than the PDF
  • Change font and text size
  • Night mode and sepia in most apps
  • Works on e-ink readers
  • An open, long-lived format

Popular Reasons to Make an EPUB

People make ebooks from PDFs for reasons like these.

  • Leisure reading Read a story or novella shared as a PDF on your e-reader in bed.
  • Exam preparation Carry study material on your phone and revise on the bus or train.
  • Proofreading drafts Authors read their manuscript as a reader will see it and spot errors.
  • Work reading Turn long policy documents or reports into something easy to read on the move.
  • Old texts Give public-domain books from archives a comfortable reading format.
  • Accessible reading Readers with low vision can pick a large font and high contrast.
  • Course readers Teachers share handouts that students can read on any device.
  • Highlighting Mark favourite lines and make notes in your reading app.

When to Convert PDF to Ebook

An EPUB is worth making when you are:

  • Reading a long PDF on a phone
  • Loading documents onto an e-reader
  • Needing bigger text than the PDF allows
  • Travelling with lots of reading
  • Proofreading your own writing
  • Studying away from a desk
  • Wanting to highlight and bookmark
  • Reading in the dark with night mode

Tips for a Better EPUB Book

  1. Try "At each heading" first. If you end up with one enormous chapter, the PDF has no size-based headings, so try One per page.

  2. Simple single-column books convert best. Magazines and multi-column layouts can come out in a jumbled order.

  3. Pictures and diagrams are not included. For picture-heavy PDFs, keep reading the PDF itself.

  4. Fill in the title and author so the book is easy to find in your library.

  5. For Kindle, use Amazon’s Send to Kindle app or email address, which accepts EPUB files.

  6. If the tool says no selectable text was found, run the PDF through OCR PDF first.

  7. Want to polish chapters further? Open the EPUB in Calibre’s editor to fix headings by hand.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about this tool.

Can I make an EPUB from a PDF for free?

Yes. Add your PDF above, type a title and author, choose how to split chapters, and press Convert to EPUB. Your .epub is saved at once, with no fee and no account.

Can I read the EPUB on a Kindle?

Yes. Amazon’s Send to Kindle service accepts EPUB files and converts them for your Kindle. Send it through the Send to Kindle app, the website, or your Kindle email address.

Will images and formatting be kept?

Headings, paragraphs and lists are kept. Pictures, colours, fonts and the exact page design are not, because the aim is text that reflows. Picture-heavy PDFs are better read as PDFs.

Does it work on a scanned book?

Not on its own. Scanned pages are photos, and an ebook needs letters. Put the scan through OCR PDF so the words are recognised, and then make the EPUB from that version.

How are chapters decided?

You choose. "At each heading" starts a chapter at every large heading. "One per page" makes a chapter from each PDF page. "One chapter" keeps the whole text together. Chapters appear in the table of contents.

Why is my whole book one chapter?

The PDF probably has no headings that are larger than the body text, so there was nowhere to split it. Convert again with "One per page", or keep it as one section if it is short.

Which apps open the EPUB?

Apple Books, Google Play Books, Kobo devices and apps, Calibre, Thorium, Moon+ Reader and most other ebook readers. It is a standard EPUB 3 file.

How long a PDF can I convert?

There is no fixed cap on pages. Long books simply take more time and memory, so a phone may be slow with a big textbook while a laptop gets through it faster.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. Your own device reads the pages and packs the ebook. No copy ever reaches us, which keeps private manuscripts and paid material safe.

Can my mobile make the EPUB by itself?

Yes. Load this page on the phone, choose the PDF, and the finished EPUB appears in your downloads. Tap it to open it in your reading app.

Does the original PDF quality matter?

The clarity of the text does not change, because EPUB stores letters, not pictures. What matters is how cleanly the PDF stores its text: documents exported from a word processor work best.

Will PDF to EPUB keep my tables and layout?

Text and simple tables usually come across cleanly. Pages with columns, sidebars or heavy design may need some tidying afterwards, because a PDF stores positions on the page rather than a structure. Always glance through the result.

Can a scanned PDF be converted?

A scan is a picture of text, so ordinary conversion finds little to copy. Run the scan through OCR PDF first to add a text layer, or use Scan to Word, then convert as usual.

Can I run PDF to EPUB as often as I want?

Yes. There are no daily limits, no credits and no account. Convert as many files as you need, one after another, and nothing is marked or watermarked in the result.
