From .md Notes to a Paged PDF Document

Markdown to PDF Converter: before and after MD A MD FILE MARKDOWN TOPDF PDF A PDF FILE

Markdown is lovely to write and awkward to hand over. A README, a set of meeting notes or course notes written in Obsidian, Notion or VS Code look like plain text full of # signs and asterisks to someone who does not know the syntax. A PDF shows the same content properly laid out, and it opens on any phone or computer.

Upload a Markdown file or switch to "Paste it in" and type or paste straight into the box. Next decide the sheet size, which way up the page sits, how wide the margins are and whether pages get numbers. One press of Convert to PDF later, the finished document is in your downloads, named after your .md file (or document.pdf for pasted text).

Typesetting happens in the browser itself. Internal wikis, client notes and diary entries are laid out on your machine and never travel to ToolXkit.

Steps to Turn Markdown into a PDF

Five steps, whether your Markdown is in a file or on your clipboard.

  1. 1. Choose file or paste

Keep "Upload a file" selected and press "Choose a Markdown file" to select your notes. Or press "Paste it in" and paste your Markdown into the text box.

  2. 2. Pick the page size

Choose A4 for most of the world, US Letter for the United States and Canada, or Legal for longer American paper. Then choose Portrait or Landscape.

    A4US LetterLegal

  3. 3. Set the margin

The Margin slider goes from 0 to 30 percent and starts at 15. A wider margin leaves room for notes and binding; a narrow one fits more on each page.

  4. 4. Decide on page numbers

"Add page numbers" is switched on. Numbers help readers of long notes find their place; a one-sheet cheat sheet looks cleaner without them.

  5. 5. Press Convert to PDF

A short progress bar runs while the pages are laid out. The PDF downloads with your file’s name, or as document.pdf for pasted text, and a note then gives the page count and file size.

What Is Markdown?

Markdown lets you mark up text with keyboard symbols instead of toolbar buttons. Put # in front of a line to make it a heading, begin it with a dash to make a bullet, and draw a table with pipes and dashes. John Gruber created it in 2004, and it is now used by GitHub, Reddit, Obsidian, many note apps and countless documentation sites.

A Markdown file is just plain text, so it needs a program to show the formatting. Converting to PDF does that once and fixes the result on real pages. Headings get their sizes, tables get their grid lines, and the words remain real text that a reader can highlight or find with Ctrl+F.

Markdown to PDF Features

What the converter understands and the options it gives you.

Structure

Headings and styled text

Lines starting with # to ###### become headings in falling sizes. Bold, italic, strikethrough and inline code are drawn as styled text, and links stay clickable.

Lists

Bullets and numbers

Bullet lists keep their dots and numbered lists keep their numbers, nested levels included. Quotes get an indent with a grey bar.

Tables

Tables and code

Pipe tables become a ruled grid with a shaded header row. Code blocks use a fixed-width font on a grey panel, with simple colouring when a language is named.

Pages

Paper, orientation, margin

Three paper sizes, two orientations and a margin slider that runs up to 30 percent of the page.

Page sizes:

  • A4

Tips for a Clean Markdown PDF

  1. Start the document with a single # heading. It becomes the main title and is also saved as the PDF’s title.

  2. Wide tables fit better in landscape. Switch orientation if columns are squashed.

  3. Put a language name after the opening ``` of a code block, such as ```python, to get simple colouring. Blocks without one stay plain.

  4. Pictures linked from the web or from a folder are not fetched, so they stay out of the PDF. Only an image embedded as data inside the Markdown is drawn.

  5. Links stay clickable in the PDF but show only their text. Write an address out in full if it must be readable on paper.

  6. Indent a list item by two or more spaces to nest it. The PDF keeps each level indented under its parent.

  7. Pasted text downloads as document.pdf. Rename it afterwards, or upload a named .md file so the PDF takes that name.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about this tool.

How do I convert a Markdown file to PDF?

Press "Choose a Markdown file" and pick your .md file, or choose "Paste it in" and paste the text. Set the page size, orientation, margin and page numbers, then press Convert to PDF.

Can I paste Markdown instead of uploading a file?

Yes. Switch to "Paste it in" above the drop area and paste into the text box. This is handy for notes that live inside an app rather than in a file.

Which Markdown features are supported?

GitHub-style Markdown: # headings, bold, italic, strikethrough, bullet and numbered lists, pipe tables, --- rules, > quotes, inline code and ``` code fences. Numbered lists keep their numbers, quotes get a grey bar, and code sits on a grey panel in a fixed-width font.

Does it keep bold and italic text?

Yes. Words between ** are bold, words between single * or _ are italic, and ~~ gives strikethrough. The markers themselves disappear, so the page reads cleanly.

Are images in my Markdown included?

Only images embedded inside the Markdown as data. Pictures linked from a website or a folder on your computer are not fetched, which keeps your document private, so they are left out.

What happens to links?

Links are blue, underlined and clickable in the PDF, just as on a web page. Only the link text is shown, so write the address out in full if someone will read it on paper.

Can I write in Tamil or Hindi?

Yes. Devanagari, Tamil and the other major Indian scripts (Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Bengali, Gujarati) get proper fonts, along with Greek, Cyrillic and ₹. Gurmukhi for Punjabi, Chinese, Japanese and Arabic cannot be drawn yet; such characters turn into "?" and the finish message warns you.

What is the PDF file called?

An uploaded file keeps its name, so notes.md becomes notes.pdf. Pasted text downloads as document.pdf. The first # heading in your Markdown is stored as the PDF’s title, which many PDF readers show in the window bar.

Does code keep its formatting?

Yes. Code blocks keep every space and line break, set in a fixed-width font on a light grey panel. Name the language after the opening ``` and keywords, strings, numbers and comments get simple colours.

Which paper sizes are available?

Three: A4, the American Letter size and the taller Legal sheet. Each works upright or sideways, and a slider controls the blank border around the text, from nothing up to 30 percent.

Is my Markdown uploaded anywhere?

No. Reading the Markdown and building the pages both happen locally, so confidential notes and company documentation remain on your computer or phone.

Can I convert Markdown to PDF on my phone?

Yes. Copy the Markdown from your notes app, tap "Paste it in", paste, and convert. Mobile Chrome and Safari store the result with your other downloads.

Is the text in the PDF searchable?

Yes. The PDF contains real text, not a picture of text, so it can be searched, selected and copied in any PDF reader.

Will my formatting stay the same after conversion?

Simple layouts usually come through well, including headings, tables and images. Complex documents with unusual fonts, text boxes or tracked changes may shift slightly, so check the preview or the downloaded PDF before sending it anywhere important.
