The 4% rule comes from US market history over 30-year retirements. With higher inflation, or a retirement longer than 30 years, taking out less each year is safer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about this tool.

Does the 4% rule apply in India?

Cautiously at best. It comes from US historical data over 30-year retirements, and Indian inflation has been higher while the market history is shorter. Many Indian planners use 3–3.5% instead, which requires a noticeably larger corpus.

What is the biggest risk to a FIRE plan?

Sequence of returns — a poor market in the first few years of withdrawal does damage that later good years cannot repair, because the capital that would have recovered was spent. Healthcare inflation is the second, and it is the one most plans understate.

How accurate is FIRE Calculator?

It uses the standard formula for the calculation, so the maths is exact for the numbers you enter. For loans, tax and investments, treat the answer as a close estimate and confirm the final figure with your bank or adviser.

Does FIRE Calculator save the numbers I enter?

No. Your figures are worked out in the browser and are not sent to any server or stored in an account. Salary, loan and health details stay on your device.

Are the income tax calculators up to date?

They are built on the slabs published by the Income Tax Department for the year shown on each page. Rules change with each Budget, so confirm the figures on the official portal before you file.

Can I rely on these calculators for health decisions?

They are good for a quick check, such as BMI or daily calories. They are not a medical diagnosis, so talk to a doctor before changing medicine, diet or treatment based on a result.

Do I need to install an app?

No. Every calculator runs in the browser on your phone or computer, with no download and no sign-up. Bookmark the page if you use it often.
