How to Convert an Image to Grayscale

Grayscale Image Converter: before and after JPG A BEFORE GRAYSCALEIMAGECONVERTER JPG A AFTER

Black and white suits portraits, old-style prints, documents going to a mono printer and product shots that need to match. Choose a picture and it is turned to grayscale straight away, with a before and after view so you can judge the result.

The conversion weighs red, green and blue by how bright each looks to the eye, so reds do not come out washed out and blues do not go muddy. Then fine-tune with brightness, contrast and an auto-levels option, pick PNG, JPG or WebP, and download. Your photo stays on your device throughout.

Steps to Make a Photo Black and White

  1. 1. Choose an image

Press 'Choose an image' and pick the picture to convert. The grayscale version appears in the Compare panel within moments.

Move Brightness and Contrast if the picture looks flat or dark. Tick 'Auto-levels first' to stretch the tones across the full range.

What Is a Grayscale Image?

A grayscale image stores only brightness, with every pixel a shade between black and white. This converter uses the Rec. 601 luma weights, about 30 percent red, 59 percent green and 11 percent blue, which match how bright each colour appears to people. A plain average of the three channels makes red areas too light and blue areas too dark.

Tips for Better Black and White Photos

  1. Raise contrast a little after converting. Colour photos often look flat once the colour is gone.

  2. For documents going to a black and white printer, auto-levels makes the paper whiter and the text darker.

  3. Save photos as JPG at 80 to 90 percent quality for sharing. PNG files of photos are much larger for no visible gain.

  4. Untick 'Apply grayscale' to compare against the colour version with your brightness and contrast changes applied.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about this tool.

How do I make a picture black and white online for free?

Open the photo here. It turns grayscale automatically, and you can download at once or adjust brightness and contrast first. No sign-up is asked for, and nothing is stamped on the result.

Is grayscale the same as black and white?

In everyday use, yes. Strictly, grayscale keeps all the shades of grey between black and white, while pure black and white uses only two colours. This tool produces grayscale, which is what photos need.

Will converting to grayscale reduce the file size?

Often a little, because there is less colour detail to store, but the format and quality setting matter more. Choose JPG or WebP and watch the size shown under the After image.

Can I convert only part of the picture?

Not on this page. The whole image is converted. For a colour splash effect you would need an editor with masking.

Is my image uploaded?

No. Every pixel is converted inside your browser tab, so the photo and the grayscale copy you save both stay on your own device.

Does Grayscale Image Converter reduce my photo’s quality?

Converting and cropping keep quality close to the original. Compressing trades a little detail for a much smaller file, and a lighter setting keeps more of it. Compare the preview with your original before saving.

Will my photo be accepted by the exam form?

The exam photo tools follow the size, dimensions and file weight given in the official notice. Always read the latest notice too, because boards sometimes change their rules between years.

Can I edit pictures with Grayscale Image Converter straight from my gallery?

Yes. Pick a photo from your gallery or take one with the camera, then save the result back to your phone. Everything works in the browser, so there is no app to install.

Is Grayscale Image Converter free with no watermark?

Yes. Use it for as many pictures as you need without an account, and each image comes back without any logo or mark from the site.
