Margin Calculator
Work out margin, markup or the price, with tax if you need it.

- Profit per unit
- 40.00
- Cost as a share of price
- 60%
- Why they differ
- 66.67% markup and 40% margin are the same sale. For example, a 50% markup is a 33.3% margin.
Margin is profit divided by the selling price. Markup is the same profit divided by the cost. Markup is always the bigger number: a 50% markup is a 33.3% margin, and a 100% markup is a 50% margin. The tax setting only applies to the selling price. The cost is taken without tax, as a registered business claims back the tax on what it buys.
How to Calculate Profit Margin and Markup
Shopkeepers, resellers and freelancers mix up margin and markup all the time, and it costs money. Buy at 60, sell at 100, and your profit is 40: that is a 40 percent margin but a 66.7 percent markup. Quoting one as the other quietly underprices everything.
This calculator works in three directions. Find the margin from cost and price, find the price you need for a target margin, or find the most you can pay for stock and still hit your margin. It also handles GST or VAT and a quantity, and the results update as you type.

Steps to Work Out Your Margin
-
1. Choose what to work out
Pick Margin from cost and price, Price from cost and target margin, or Cost from price and margin.
MarginPriceCost
-
2. Enter the numbers
Fill in the cost, selling price and target margin as the mode needs. The hint under each box says when it is not used.
-
3. Add tax if it applies
Type your GST or VAT rate and say whether the selling price includes or excludes it. Leave it at 0 if tax does not apply.
-
4. Read margin, markup and profit
Gross margin, markup and profit per unit appear first. Add a quantity to see total profit and total revenue too.
What Is a Margin Calculator?
It works out gross margin, which is profit divided by the selling price, alongside markup, which is profit divided by the cost. When tax is included, the calculator first takes the tax out of the price, because GST or VAT is collected for the government and is not your income. The cost is treated as your net cost, since a registered business reclaims the tax it pays on purchases.

Input
Cost 60, selling price 100
Result
Gross margin 40% Markup 66.67%
Both are shown because they are different numbers for the same sale, and quoting one as the other is a costly mistake.

Tips for Pricing With Margins
-
Include every cost in the cost figure: purchase price, shipping, packaging and platform fees. Leaving one out inflates the margin.
-
On Amazon or Flipkart, subtract marketplace commission from your price before calculating, or add it to the cost.
-
In India, set GST to your product's slab, such as 5, 12 or 18 percent, and choose 'Includes tax' if your MRP is tax-inclusive.
-
Use the Price mode before a sale. It tells you the lowest price that still keeps your target margin.
-
Results carry no currency symbol, so the calculator works the same for rupees, pounds, dollars or euros.
Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about this tool.
What is the difference between margin and markup?
Both use the same profit. Margin divides it by the selling price; markup divides it by the cost. Buying at 60 and selling at 100 is a 40 percent margin and a 66.7 percent markup. Markup is always the bigger number.
How do I calculate the selling price from a margin?
Divide the cost by one minus the margin. For a 40 percent margin on a cost of 60, that is 60 divided by 0.6, which gives 100. Choose the Price mode and the calculator does this, adding tax if you enter a rate.
What is a good profit margin for a small business?
It depends heavily on the trade. Grocery and electronics retail often runs on thin margins, while handmade goods, services and software can be much higher. Compare with others in your own trade rather than a general rule.
Should GST be included when calculating margin?
No. GST is collected for the government, so the margin is worked on the price before tax. If your selling price includes GST, choose 'Includes tax' and the calculator removes it first.
Can I get a 100 percent margin?
Only if the goods cost nothing. A 100 percent margin would mean every rupee of the price is profit, so the calculator refuses targets of 100 percent or more and explains why.
How accurate is Margin Calculator?
It uses the standard formula for the calculation, so the maths is exact for the numbers you enter. For loans, tax and investments, treat the answer as a close estimate and confirm the final figure with your bank or adviser.
Does Margin Calculator save the numbers I enter?
No. Your figures are worked out in the browser and are not sent to any server or stored in an account. Salary, loan and health details stay on your device.
Are the income tax calculators up to date?
They are built on the slabs published by the Income Tax Department for the year shown on each page. Rules change with each Budget, so confirm the figures on the official portal before you file.
Can I rely on these calculators for health decisions?
They are good for a quick check, such as BMI or daily calories. They are not a medical diagnosis, so talk to a doctor before changing medicine, diet or treatment based on a result.
Do I need to install an app?
No. Every calculator runs in the browser on your phone or computer, with no download and no sign-up. Bookmark the page if you use it often.
