How to Convert Word Documents to HTML
Copying from Word straight into a website editor usually drags in hidden styling: odd fonts, stray spans, extra spacing and colours that clash with your site. Saving as a web page from Word is even worse, producing bloated code that is painful to edit.
Choose your .docx file and hit the Convert to HTML button. The converter reads the document’s structure and writes tidy HTML: real headings, plain paragraphs, bulleted and numbered lists, tables, links, bold, italics, underlining and any pictures. Pick Full web page for a complete page with a small built-in stylesheet, or Just the content for bare tags to paste into a site.
Below the button, a preview headed "What was read" prints the opening lines of the converted content and tallies the headings and tables found, so gaps are obvious. All of this happens in the page itself, and the Word file stays on your machine.

One choice to make, then pick the file and convert.
-
1. Choose the Word file
Drop a .docx file onto the box labelled "Word .docx file", or press Choose file. Older .doc files need to be saved as .docx in Word first.

Full web pageJust the content
-
3. Check the preview
The "What was read" panel lists up to the first 60 lines, with headings marked by # signs, bullets as dots and tables as rows. Its header counts blocks, headings and tables.
Look for:
- Every section heading you expect
- Tables showing their rows
- Lists showing as bullets
-
4. Open the HTML file
The .html file downloads with your document’s name. Open it in any browser to view it, or in a code editor to copy the markup.
-
5. Use the code on your site
With Just the content, paste the whole file into your CMS’s HTML view. With Full web page, keep it as a stand-alone page or copy what sits between the body tags.

What Does Word to HTML Produce?
A .docx file is a bundle of XML files describing text, styles, pictures and page layout for Microsoft Word. HTML is the markup browsers display. Converting means picking out the meaning of the document (this line is a heading, these lines are a list, this is a table) and writing it with standard HTML tags.
The output is deliberately plain. Word’s fonts, colours, font sizes and page settings are left behind so your website’s own styles take over, while bold, italics, underlining, strikethrough and links are kept. Pictures are embedded inside the HTML file as data, so the page has no loose image files to lose.
HTML page
.HTMLA self-contained web page, or just its content, with simple semantic tags and pictures built in.

Word to HTML Converter Features
What is converted, and what you can check before using it.
Semantic headings
Paragraphs styled Heading 1 to Heading 6 turn into h1 to h6, Word’s Title style becomes h1 and quotes become blockquotes.
Both kinds of list
Bulleted lists are written as ul and numbered lists as ol, with indented levels nested inside them.
Bordered tables
Tables become plain HTML tables. The full web page adds light borders from its built-in stylesheet.
Pictures embedded
Images in the document are stored inside the HTML file as data, so nothing needs uploading separately.
What was read
A panel lists up to sixty lines of content alongside tallies of blocks, headings and tables.
Counted:
- Blocks
- Headings
- Tables
Full page or content
Full web page adds a head, a title, a mobile viewport and readable default styles. Just the content gives the bare tags with no styling at all.

Tips for Clean Word to HTML Results
-
Use Word’s Heading styles, not just big bold text. Only real heading styles become HTML headings.
-
Links keep their addresses. Check any that point to files on your own computer, since those will not work once the page is online.
-
Bold, italics, underline and strikethrough stay as simple tags. Colours and font sizes do not, so set those with your site’s own styles.
-
Only lists made with Word’s numbering button become numbered lists. Numbers typed by hand come through as ordinary paragraphs.
-
Pasting into WordPress or a blog editor? Pick Just the content, so no second set of styles comes along with your text.
-
An old .doc needs re-saving in the newer .docx format before this page can read it.
-
Large photos make a large HTML file because they are embedded. Resize pictures in Word first for web use.
-
Glance at the "What was read" panel. Whatever is absent there will be absent from the downloaded page as well.
Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about this tool.
What are the steps to get HTML from a .docx?
Pick the .docx, tap Convert to HTML, and read the preview that appears. Meanwhile the .html file has already landed in your downloads, named after the Word file.
Does it work with old .doc files?
No, only .docx is read. Re-save the old file in the newer format using any current word processor (Google Docs can export it too), then bring that copy here.
Is the HTML clean enough for WordPress?
Yes. Choose Just the content and you get only simple tags such as h1, p, ul, ol, table, a and img, without Word’s inline styles. Paste the file’s text into the Code or HTML view of the editor.
Are images included?
They are. Every picture is embedded directly in the HTML as data, so the file shows them without any separate image files. Large photos make the HTML file larger.
Does it keep bold, italics and links?
Yes. Bold, italics, underlining, strikethrough and links carry over as simple HTML tags, and each link keeps its address. Colours, fonts and font sizes are left out, so your website’s styles take charge.
What is the difference between Full web page and Just the content?
Full web page gives a complete .html file with a title, a mobile setting and light styling, ready to open in a browser. Just the content gives only the tags for your text, pictures and tables, with no styling, for dropping into a website or blog editor.
What happens to tables?
Each Word table becomes an HTML table. On Full web page, the built-in stylesheet gives it thin borders and padding. Header rows are marked when the document identifies them.
Are numbered lists kept?
Yes. Numbered lists become ol lists and bulleted ones become ul lists, with indented levels nested inside. Your website’s styles then decide which numbers or bullet shapes are shown.
Can I see the result before using it?
Yes. After converting, the "What was read" panel shows the first lines of content with counts of headings and tables. You can also open the downloaded file in your browser.
Is my Word document uploaded?
No. Unpacking the .docx and writing the HTML both happen locally, so drafts, contracts and internal policies are not transmitted anywhere.
Does the HTML keep my fonts and colours?
No. Word’s fonts, colours, sizes and spacing are left out on purpose. Full web page uses a neutral built-in style that your website or email template can override, and Just the content has no styling at all.
Can I convert Word to HTML on a phone?
Yes. Pick the .docx from your phone’s files, press Convert to HTML and open the downloaded page in your browser or share it.
Will Word to HTML keep my tables and layout?
Text and simple tables usually come across cleanly. Pages with columns, sidebars or heavy design may need some tidying afterwards, because a PDF stores positions on the page rather than a structure. Always glance through the result.
Can a scanned PDF be converted?
A scan is a picture of text, so ordinary conversion finds little to copy. Run the scan through OCR PDF first to add a text layer, or use Scan to Word, then convert as usual.
