What is inside

  • A generated arpeggio over four repeating chords; no recorded or third-party music
  • 128 kbps constant bitrate, 44.1 kHz, mono
  • Length follows size: 10 KB is about 0.6 s and 1 MB about 1 min 2 s. Above 1 MB the music repeats, so 100 MB plays for about 1 hour 40 minutes and 1 GB for about 17 hours
  • An ID3v2 tag with the title “ToolXkit sample MP3”
  • The tag’s padding makes each file exactly its labelled size

About MP3 files

MP3 is the audio part of the MPEG-1 standard from the early 1990s. It is lossy: it removes sounds the ear is unlikely to notice. At 128 kbps a song takes roughly a megabyte a minute.

It is still the audio format that plays on almost anything: phones, car stereos, browsers, podcast apps and cheap speakers. Voice notes, ringtones and podcast episodes are often shared as MP3 for that reason.

Length is where things go wrong. In a variable-bitrate MP3 a player has to guess the duration unless the file carries a proper header, so the time shown can be wrong and seeking can jump. These samples use a constant bitrate, so the length is exact.

Questions

Does a 1 GB MP3 really play that long?

Yes. Above 1 MB the file repeats our minute of music until it reaches the size, made on your device, so a 1 GB MP3 plays for about 17 hours. It is a good test of long-file seeking and players that load the whole file.

Why is it mono?

Mono at 128 kbps is simple and common, and a stereo file at the same bitrate holds the same length. If your tool has a stereo-only path, this is a quick way to find out.

What is at the start of the file?

An ID3v2 tag with the title and some empty padding, which is normal for MP3. A tool that expects audio to start at byte zero will fail here, and on most real MP3s too.

For developers: exact bytes and SHA-256

Sizes are decimal (1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes). The hosted files never change between builds, so these checksums stay valid.
