How to Use the Character Counter Online

Character Counter: before and after TEXT A YOUR INPUT CHARACTERCOUNTER DONE A RESULT

Character Counter shows how many characters your text has, with spaces and without, as you type. Word, sentence, paragraph and line counts sit beside it, with a reading time and a speaking time. Use it when a form, an ad slot or an exam answer box gives you a limit and you need to know which count it means.

Counts characters with and without spaces as you type. The distinction matters because different systems count differently: SMS and Twitter count every character, while many word limits in publishing and academia are quoted excluding spaces.

Tips and Good to Know

  1. It counts what you paste, not what a website will count. Some platforms count a link or an emoji as more than one character, so leave a little room.

  2. For a limit on letters only, digits only or punctuation, open Letter Counter, which splits those out.

  3. It does not open .docx or PDF files. Copy the text out of the document and paste it in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about this tool.

Do spaces count as characters?

Both figures are shown: characters with spaces and characters without. Twitter/X, SMS and most form limits count spaces; some essay rules do not, which is why the two are separated.

How does this count words in other languages?

Words are split on spaces and punctuation, which is right for English and most European languages. For Chinese and Japanese, which have no spaces, the character count is the meaningful number and is what those platforms use.

What are the platform limits shown?

The common ones: 280 for a post on X, 160 for a single SMS, 2,200 for an Instagram caption, 150 for an Instagram bio, 3,000 for a LinkedIn post. The counter turns red as you pass each one.

Is my text sent anywhere when I use Character Counter?

No. The text you paste is handled in your browser and never leaves the page. That makes it safe for drafts, customer lists and anything else you would rather keep to yourself.

Is there a limit on how much text I can paste?

The site sets none. Long documents are handled by your own device, so a whole book may be slow on an older phone. Articles, essays and long lists are no trouble.

Can I use Character Counter without making an account?

Yes. There is no login, no email to hand over and no daily limit. Open the page, paste or type, and copy or download the result when it is ready.

Why does my word count differ from Microsoft Word?

Programs treat hyphenated words, numbers and symbols a little differently. The gap is usually a few words in a long piece. If a teacher or portal sets a limit, stay a little under it to be safe.

Do the QR codes made here expire?

No. The information is stored directly in the pattern, with no redirect through our servers, so the code keeps working for as long as the link or text inside it stays valid.
