How to Change a GIF into PNG Free
GIF is one of the oldest picture formats on the web. It is still everywhere in logos, icons, diagrams and old website graphics, but it can only hold 256 colours and many modern tools, design apps and document editors handle PNG far better.
This page takes your GIF files and rewrites them as PNG. Add a single GIF and every frame is laid out as a small picture with its timing, all picked to start with. Tap frames to leave them out, or use Pick all, Pick none and First only, then press the download button. One frame saves as a PNG, and several arrive in one ZIP.
With several GIFs, choose between the first frame of each one or every frame of all of them. Transparent areas stay transparent unless you switch that off and pick a background colour, and a JPG choice is there when you want smaller files. The GIFs are read and rewritten locally by your browser; no copy travels anywhere.

Steps to Convert GIF Images to PNG
A few quick steps, with sensible choices already made for you.
-
1. Pick your GIF files
Drag GIF images onto the drop box or press Choose files. You can select many at once, and each one is listed with its size so you can check what you added.
What you see next:
- One GIF: a strip of every frame, with its delay in ms.
- A line with frame count, width × height and running time.
- Several GIFs: a What to save choice instead.
-
2. Pick frames and format
Tap a frame to pick or unpick it. Under Save as, keep "PNG, keeps transparency", or choose "JPG, smaller file" with a Quality slider. Turn off "Keep see-through areas transparent" to fill them with a background colour of your choice.
-
3. Press the download button
Its label follows your choice, for example "Download frame as PNG" or "Download 12 frames as PNG (ZIP)". A green line then confirms how many files were saved and their total size.
-
4. Save the PNG files
One frame arrives as a single PNG in your downloads. More frames from one GIF come as a ZIP named after it, like dance-frames-png.zip, and a batch of GIFs as gif-frames-png.zip.
-
5. Use the PNG anywhere
Drop the new picture into Word, Google Slides, Canva or your website editor. It behaves like any other PNG, transparent corners included.
What Is GIF to PNG Conversion?
GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) dates from 1987. Each GIF stores its pixels using a palette of at most 256 colours, and it can hold a simple animation. PNG (Portable Network Graphics) arrived in the mid-1990s as a better format for still images, with lossless compression, full colour and smooth transparency.
Converting from GIF to PNG does not change what the picture looks like. The colours, edges and transparent parts are carried over exactly. What changes is the container: PNG is the format editing software, slide programs and most websites prefer for graphics today.

- Behaves well in Word and slides
- Many GIFs converted together

Common Uses for a GIF to PNG Converter
Here is where a PNG version of a GIF usually comes in handy.
- Old company logos Many logos from early websites exist only as GIF. A PNG copy is easier to reuse in new material.
- A still from an animation Save the opening frame of an animated GIF as a picture for a thumbnail or a document.
- Slides and handouts Put diagrams and charts into PowerPoint or Google Slides in a format they handle cleanly.
- Website refresh Replace old GIF icons and buttons on a site with PNG versions during a redesign.
- Editing clip art Recolour or resize old clip art in a modern editor without the 256-colour limit getting in the way.
- Course material Teachers turn old GIF diagrams into PNG for worksheets and learning platforms.
- Stickers and emojis Keep a transparent still of a small animated sticker for use in chats or designs.
- Tidying an archive Convert a folder of legacy GIF files so everything in the collection shares one modern format.
GIF to PNG Converter Features
Kept simple on purpose.
Every frame, or just one
See each frame of an animated GIF with its timing, and save any mix of them. A batch of GIFs gives first frames or all frames in one ZIP.
Pixel-for-pixel copy
PNG is lossless, so the converted picture matches the GIF exactly, including hard edges on text and lines.
Clear areas kept
Transparent parts of the GIF are not filled with a colour. They stay see-through in the PNG.
Frame facts shown
The strip header gives the frame count, the width by height and the running time, and each frame shows its own delay.
Quick picks:
- Pick all
- Pick none
- First only
PNG or JPG
PNG keeps transparency. JPG makes smaller files, with a quality slider and a background colour for see-through areas.
Fill see-through areas
Switch off transparency and pick any colour to sit behind the picture, handy for documents with a coloured page.

Tips for GIF to PNG Conversion
-
Need the whole animation? Keep it as a GIF, or turn it into a much smaller video with GIF to MP4 instead.
-
If the first frame of an animation is blank, press Pick none and tap the frame that shows the picture you want.
-
Small flat graphics often come out smaller as PNG. Busy photographic GIFs can come out bigger, which is normal.
-
Converting does not add colours that were not there. Colour banding in the GIF will still be visible in the PNG.
-
Check transparency by opening the PNG in a program that shows a chequered background.
-
Name your files clearly before converting a large batch, since the PNGs keep the original names.
Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about this tool.
How do I convert a GIF to PNG?
Pick the GIF, check the frames that are ticked, and press the download button. A still GIF gives one PNG. An animated one gives a ZIP of every frame, unless you press First only or tap a single frame.
What happens to an animated GIF?
Each frame can become its own still PNG. The strip shows them all with their timings, and you choose which to keep. PNG is a still-picture format in almost every program, so the movement itself is not carried over.
Will the transparent background be kept?
Yes, as long as "Keep see-through areas transparent" stays on, which it does to begin with. Turn it off only if you want a solid background, and pick the colour yourself.
Does converting GIF to PNG lose quality?
No. PNG is lossless, so every pixel matches the GIF. The picture will not look sharper either, since the GIF’s limited colours are copied exactly as they are.
Will the PNG be bigger than the GIF?
It depends. Simple graphics like logos and icons are often smaller as PNG. Photographic GIFs with lots of dithering can be larger. For smaller files, choose "JPG, smaller file" under Save as.
Can I convert several GIFs at the same time?
Yes. Pick a whole folder’s worth, then under What to save choose the first frame of each GIF or every frame of every GIF. One press handles all of them, packed inside gif-frames-png.zip.
Is this GIF converter safe for private images?
Yes. The files are opened and converted by your web browser on your own device. They are never uploaded, so nobody else can see them.
Can I do this from a mobile phone?
Yes. Visit this address in Chrome or Safari on the handset, tap Choose files, select the GIFs and convert. Look for the PNG, or the ZIP of frames, in the Downloads folder afterwards.
Can I pick which frame of the GIF to save?
Yes. With one GIF added, every frame appears in a strip. Tap the ones you want, or use Pick all, Pick none or First only. To keep the full animation in a lighter file, GIF to MP4 is a better choice.
How large a GIF can it handle?
No fixed limit is set. Since the conversion uses your own hardware, a huge GIF simply needs enough free memory in the browser. Ordinary GIFs convert without trouble on phones and computers.
Is PNG better than GIF?
For still images, usually yes. PNG supports far more colours and smoother transparency. GIF’s main advantage is simple animation, which PNG does not offer in most software.
Does GIF to PNG reduce my photo’s quality?
Converting and cropping keep quality close to the original. Compressing trades a little detail for a much smaller file, and a lighter setting keeps more of it. Compare the preview with your original before saving.
Will my photo be accepted by the exam form?
The exam photo tools follow the size, dimensions and file weight given in the official notice. Always read the latest notice too, because boards sometimes change their rules between years.
Can I edit pictures with GIF to PNG straight from my gallery?
Yes. Pick a photo from your gallery or take one with the camera, then save the result back to your phone. Everything works in the browser, so there is no app to install.
