How to Convert JPG Photos to WebP

JPG to WebP Converter: before and after JPG A JPG FILE JPG TO WEBP WEBP A WEBP FILE

Heavy photos are the most common reason a website feels slow, especially on mobile data. Google’s page speed tests even suggest serving images in a next-generation format such as WebP.

This converter reads your JPG photos and saves each as a WebP at the quality you choose, keeping the same width and height. Google’s own study found WebP files around a quarter to a third smaller than JPEGs of matching quality, and every current browser can show them.

Convert one photo or a whole batch and get them back in a ZIP. The encoding is done by your browser itself, so nothing is uploaded.

Steps to Create WebP From JPG

Four steps from a folder of JPGs to lighter WebP images.

  1. 1. Select your JPG files

Drag in .jpg or .jpeg photos, or use Choose files. You can add many at once for a whole gallery or product catalogue.

  2. 2. Choose the quality

The slider starts at 92 percent. For websites, 75 to 85 percent usually looks the same as the JPG and saves far more space.

  3. 3. Press Convert to WEBP

Photos are encoded one at a time. When they are done, a summary gives every file’s pixel dimensions next to its old and new weight.

  4. 4. Save the WebP images

A single photo downloads as a .webp file. A batch arrives as images-webp.zip.

  5. 5. Use them on your site

Upload the WebP files to WordPress, Shopify or your own server, or reference them in your HTML with an img tag.

What Is WebP?

WebP is an image format created by Google for the web and now published as an IETF standard, RFC 9649. It uses smarter compression than JPEG, so a photo of the same visible quality takes fewer bytes.

Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari and Opera all display WebP, as do Android and iOS apps built on them. Converting your JPGs lets pages load faster without making the pictures look worse.

When WebP Makes Sense

Converting JPG to WebP is worth it when you are:

  • Launching or redesigning a website
  • Fixing a slow page speed score
  • Uploading a new product catalogue
  • Publishing a photo-heavy blog post
  • Targeting visitors on mobile data
  • Trying to cut hosting or CDN costs
  • Building image assets for an app

Tips for Great WebP Images

  1. Try 80 percent first. It usually saves a lot and looks the same as the JPG on screen.

  2. Convert from the best original you have. Each lossy re-save loses a little detail, and a JPG already has.

  3. Resize huge camera photos to the width your site really shows before converting, for a far bigger saving.

  4. If you see a message that your browser cannot save WebP, which can happen in Safari and on iPhones and iPads, open this page in a desktop or Android build of Chrome, Edge or Firefox instead.

  5. For email and printing, keep JPG. Some older mail programs and print shops still do not accept WebP.

  6. Compare a converted image with the original at full size before replacing a whole gallery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about this tool.

How do I turn a batch of JPG photos into WebP?

Drop the JPG photos into the tool above, leave the quality at 92 or move it lower, and press Convert to WEBP. A lone image saves as .webp; a set comes as a ZIP. It takes seconds and costs nothing.

How much smaller will my photos be?

It depends on the photo and the quality you choose. Google’s own tests found WebP around 25 to 34 percent smaller than JPEG at similar quality. The results panel shows your exact saving.

Will image quality be reduced?

WebP here is a lossy format, like JPG, so a little detail is traded for size. At 80 percent or above most people cannot tell the difference on screen. Keep the original JPG in case you need it later.

Can I convert many JPGs at once?

Yes. Select as many photos as you like; they are converted in turn and delivered in images-webp.zip. Your device’s memory is the only practical limit.

Do all browsers support WebP?

All current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari and Opera display WebP. Only very old browsers, such as Internet Explorer, cannot, and they are now rare.

Why does it say my browser cannot save WebP?

Displaying WebP and creating it are separate abilities. Some browsers, notably Safari and the browsers on iPhone and iPad, may not be able to write WebP. Desktop and Android versions of Chrome, Edge and Firefox can.

Is WebP good for SEO?

Indirectly, yes. Smaller images help pages load faster, and speed is part of how search engines judge page experience. Remember to keep useful file names and alt text too.

Does WordPress accept WebP?

Yes. WordPress has supported WebP uploads since version 5.8, so you can add the converted images to the media library like any JPG.

Is the camera data kept?

No. Because the WebP is painted anew from the visible picture, the hidden EXIF block with the phone model, shooting date and GPS coordinates is dropped. For photos going onto a public site, that is usually welcome.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. Your browser does the encoding on your own device. The photos stay off our servers and everyone else’s, and they are gone from memory when you close the tab.

Is this JPG to WebP converter free?

Yes. Convert a single snapshot or an entire product catalogue without registering, without a logo being stamped on the images and without being told to come back tomorrow.

Does JPG to WebP reduce my photo’s quality?

Converting and cropping keep quality close to the original. Compressing trades a little detail for a much smaller file, and a lighter setting keeps more of it. Compare the preview with your original before saving.

Will my photo be accepted by the exam form?

The exam photo tools follow the size, dimensions and file weight given in the official notice. Always read the latest notice too, because boards sometimes change their rules between years.

Can I edit pictures with JPG to WebP straight from my gallery?

Yes. Pick a photo from your gallery or take one with the camera, then save the result back to your phone. Everything works in the browser, so there is no app to install.
