How to Convert Markdown to HTML Online

Markdown to HTML: before and after MD A MD FILE MARKDOWN TOHTML HTML A HTML FILE

Markdown to HTML is a live editor. Type or paste Markdown into the left box, or open a .md or .markdown file, and the rendered page appears on the right as you type. Headings at every level, bold, italic and strikethrough, inline and fenced code, links, images, nested and numbered lists, task lists, pipe tables with column alignment, quotes and rules all come through as real HTML tags. Copy the HTML as a fragment for a CMS, or download it as one complete page with its own styles.

Renders Markdown into a page as you type, with the HTML ready to copy or download. It follows GitHub Flavored Markdown — CommonMark plus tables, strikethrough and task lists — and each of those extensions can be switched off if the place the HTML is going does not expect them.

Why Convert Files to PDF?

A PDF looks the same on every phone, computer and printer, so the layout you made is the layout people see. Turning a Word file, spreadsheet, slide deck or photo into PDF also makes it harder to change by accident.

“Send a PDF and the reader sees what you saw.”
  • Same layout on every device
  • Ready for any printer
  • Photos gathered into pages
  • One format for every file
  • Fonts that do not shift
  • Accepted by most portals
  • Harder to edit by mistake
  • Nothing to install

Popular Uses for PDF Converters

Turning something into PDF is often the last step before it is sent.

  • Documents from photos Turn photos of ID cards, receipts or handwritten notes into a PDF to upload.
  • Resumes and CVs Save a Word CV as PDF so the recruiter sees your formatting unchanged.
  • Spreadsheet reports Convert an Excel sheet or CSV to PDF for someone who has no spreadsheet program.
  • Slide handouts Turn a PowerPoint deck into a PDF that attendees can read on their phones.

Tips and Good to Know

  1. Raw HTML is escaped by default, so a <b> tag in the source appears as the literal characters. Turn on Allow raw HTML to render it; scripts and event attributes are still removed.

  2. Footnotes, definition lists and maths are not part of GitHub-style Markdown and stay as plain text.

  3. Images are linked, not embedded. The .html file refers to them by the address in the Markdown, so a relative path only works if the image sits next to the file.

  4. If you need a printable file rather than a web page, Markdown to PDF gives you page size and page numbers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about this tool.

Which Markdown flavour does it follow?

CommonMark with the common table and strikethrough extensions, which is what GitHub-style Markdown means in practice. Footnotes and definition lists are not part of that and pass through as literal text.

Is raw HTML inside my Markdown preserved?

Not by default: it is escaped and shows up as text, which is the safe choice for Markdown other people wrote. Turn on Allow raw HTML to render it. Even then, script tags, on… event attributes and javascript: links are stripped from the output.

Do I have to upload a file?

No. Type or paste straight into the box and the preview updates as you go. Open .md file is there for an existing file, and you can also drop one onto the box.

Will my formatting stay the same after conversion?

Simple layouts usually come through well, including headings, tables and images. Complex documents with unusual fonts, text boxes or tracked changes may shift slightly, so check the preview or the downloaded PDF before sending it anywhere important.

Can I use Markdown to HTML on my phone?

Yes, it runs in the mobile browser you already have. Choose a file from your gallery or files app, convert it, and the PDF is saved to your downloads. Large files take longer on a phone.

Is there a file size limit for Markdown to HTML?

There is no fixed limit set by the site. Because conversion happens on your device, the practical size depends on its memory. Most everyday documents and photos convert without trouble on a modern phone or computer.

Do I need Microsoft Office installed?

No. The conversion is done by code running in the page, so you do not need Word, Excel or PowerPoint on your computer. That makes it handy on shared or office machines where you cannot install anything.
