The 238 words a minute default is the average for silent reading of English non-fiction, and 183 the average for reading aloud, from Brysbaert (2019), a review of 190 studies. Presenting to an audience is slower again, around 130–150. All of these are averages with a wide spread around them: difficulty, familiarity and layout all move the figure, and technical material is read considerably slower.
How to Calculate Reading Time for Any Text
Bloggers put '6 min read' under a headline, teachers plan how long a passage takes in class, and speakers need to know whether a script fits a ten-minute slot. Paste your text, or just type its word count, and this calculator answers all three.
It shows the silent reading time, the time to the second, how long it takes to say out loud, and a rough number of slides for a talk. Averages come from a large review of reading research, and you can switch to slow, fast or your own speed.

What Is a Reading Time Calculator?
It divides the number of words by a reading speed in words per minute. The default, 238 words a minute for silent reading and 183 for reading aloud, comes from Marc Brysbaert's 2019 review of 190 studies of adult English readers. Real readers vary widely, and technical material is read more slowly, so treat the result as a guide.

Tips for Using Reading Time
-
For blog posts, paste only the article body. Menus, captions and author bios inflate the count.
-
When rehearsing a speech, time yourself reading one page aloud and use Custom to match your real pace.
-
For students or readers new to English, use the Slow setting. It gives a more realistic figure for study material.
-
Planning a video voice-over? Use the speaking time, then add a few seconds for pauses and on-screen text.

No. Your figures are worked out in the browser and are not sent to any server or stored in an account. Salary, loan and health details stay on your device.
Are the income tax calculators up to date?
They are built on the slabs published by the Income Tax Department for the year shown on each page. Rules change with each Budget, so confirm the figures on the official portal before you file.
Can I rely on these calculators for health decisions?
They are good for a quick check, such as BMI or daily calories. They are not a medical diagnosis, so talk to a doctor before changing medicine, diet or treatment based on a result.
Do I need to install an app?
No. Every calculator runs in the browser on your phone or computer, with no download and no sign-up. Bookmark the page if you use it often.
