How to Split a PDF by Chapters Using Bookmarks
Many long PDFs carry an outline, the clickable list of chapters shown in the sidebar of most PDF readers. Textbooks, annual reports, government manuals and exported Word documents usually have one. That outline already knows where every chapter begins.
This tool reads it for you. Each top-level bookmark becomes the start of a new file, which runs until the page before the next bookmark. The last one runs to the end of the document. Sub-headings inside a chapter stay part of that chapter’s file.
Press Split by bookmarks and the chapters arrive in one ZIP. A name such as 03-Methodology.pdf tells you both the running order and the chapter. Pages are copied as they are, so every chapter looks exactly like it did in the full document.

Split by Bookmarks in Five Steps
There are no settings to fill in. The document’s own outline does the work.
-
1. Choose a bookmarked PDF
Press Choose file or drop the document in. To check it has bookmarks, open it in a PDF reader and look for an outline or bookmarks panel.
-
2. Press Split by bookmarks
The outline is read and each top-level entry is matched to the page it points at. Progress shows the title being written, such as "Writing Chapter 4…".
-
3. Download the ZIP
All the chapter files arrive bundled as a single ZIP whose name ends in "-chapters". A note tells you how many files were made.
-
4. Open the chapters
Unzip the download. Every file begins with a two-digit position in outline order, then the bookmark title, which keeps them lined up properly when listed by name.
Good to know:
- Only top-level bookmarks start new files.
- Bookmarks that link to websites instead of pages are skipped.
- If the PDF has no bookmarks at all, you are told and pointed to Split PDF.
-
5. Check the first chapter
Open 01 and the last file to confirm they start and end where you expected. If a cover or preface is missing, it sat before the first bookmark; Extract Pages can save it on its own.

What Are PDF Bookmarks?
Bookmarks, also called the outline, are a clickable table of contents stored inside a PDF. Each entry has a title and points at a page. Word processors often create them from headings when you export to PDF.
Splitting by bookmarks uses those entries as cutting points. Because the outline was made by whoever built the document, the split follows its real chapter structure rather than a guess based on page counts.
Chapter files
.ZIPOne PDF per top-level bookmark, numbered and named after each chapter.
Documents with useful bookmarks
- Textbooks and e-books
- Annual reports
- Government manuals
- Theses exported from Word
- Legal bundles with an index
- Company handbooks
- Technical documentation
Why Split by Bookmarks?
Typing page ranges for twenty chapters is slow and easy to get wrong. The bookmarks already mark the boundaries, so using them gives an accurate split in one press, with sensible file names thrown in.
“Let the document’s own contents page do the cutting.”
- One press for every chapter
- Files named after chapters
- One tidy ZIP
- Easy to share one chapter
- Boundaries that match the outline
- No page ranges to type
- Pages copied unchanged
- Lighter files for phones
Popular Uses for Bookmark Splitting

- Policy manuals Pass colleagues the section of an HR or government manual that applies to them.
- Legal bundles Separate tabs of a bundle into individual documents.
- Course packs Release one module a week to learners from a single master file.

Split by Bookmarks Features
Everything is taken from the PDF itself.
Reads the bookmarks
The document’s top-level outline decides where each new file begins.
Chapter titles as file names
Each file is numbered and named after its bookmark, so the order is obvious.
For example:
- 01-Introduction.pdf
- 02-Background.pdf
- 03-Methods.pdf
Single ZIP
All chapters come in one download, however many there are.
Unchanged pages
Pages are copied exactly, keeping their text, images and page sizes.
Honest when it cannot
A PDF without bookmarks, or with only web links in its outline, gets a clear message.
Restricted books open
E-books and reports that forbid printing or copying are opened while loading.

Tips for Bookmark Splits
-
Peek at the bookmarks panel in any PDF viewer beforehand. Its top-level entries are exactly where the cuts will fall.
-
Files start at the first bookmark. If a cover or contents page sits before it, save those pages separately with Extract Pages.
-
No bookmarks? Split PDF lets you set the chapter ranges yourself.
-
Making the PDF from Word? Use Heading 1 for chapter titles and turn on bookmarks when exporting, so this tool has an outline to follow.
-
Want two chapters together? Merge those two files after splitting.
-
Photo-heavy chapters can stay bulky; shrink those with Compress PDF before sending.
Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about this tool.
Can a PDF be broken up chapter by chapter automatically?
If the PDF has bookmarks, choose it here and press Split by bookmarks. Each top-level bookmark becomes its own file, and all the chapters download together in a ZIP.
How do I know if my PDF has bookmarks?
Open it in a PDF reader such as Adobe Acrobat Reader, Edge or Chrome and look for a bookmarks or outline panel in the sidebar. If it lists chapter titles, the file can be split here.
What if my PDF has no bookmarks?
The tool tells you it found none and suggests Split PDF, where you can set page ranges for each chapter instead.
Are sub-chapters split into their own files?
No. Only top-level bookmarks start new files. Sections nested under a chapter, such as 2.1 and 2.2, stay inside that chapter’s file along with its other pages.
What happens to pages before the first bookmark?
The files begin at the first bookmark’s page, so pages in front of it, such as a cover, are not in any of them. Save those with Extract Pages if you need them.
How are the files named?
Each file starts with its position, 01, 02, 03, followed by the bookmark title, for example 02-Literature Review.pdf. The bundle itself is called after your document, ending in "-chapters".
Does splitting change the pages?
No. Each chapter receives untouched copies of its pages: words you could highlight before remain highlightable, and photos keep their detail. Side by side with the full document, they look identical.
Does the bookmark splitter upload anything?
No. The outline is read, and each chapter file written, without the document ever leaving your machine. Your e-book, report or manual is never transmitted, so it is fine for confidential material.
Can I split a protected e-book?
Protection that merely blocks printing or copying is removed as the file loads, so the split goes ahead. An e-book guarded by an opening password is another matter: Unlock PDF, with the password typed in, gives you a copy this tool can read.
Why was one bookmark skipped?
Bookmarks that point to a website rather than a page inside the document have no page to start from, so the splitter ignores them and moves on to the next entry.
Will Split PDF by Bookmarks lower the quality of my PDF?
No. Rearranging, rotating, splitting or joining pages does not re-compress the text or pictures inside them, so they look as sharp as before. Tools that change the layout, such as booklets, scale the pages without redrawing their contents.
Can I use Split PDF by Bookmarks on a phone or tablet?
Yes. It works in Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox on phones and tablets as well as computers. Long documents take longer on a phone, but the steps and the result are the same.
Can I rearrange a password-protected PDF?
You need to remove the password first. Use Unlock PDF with the password you already know, then come back and rearrange the pages. None of the tools here can open a file whose password you do not have.
Is Split PDF by Bookmarks really free with no watermark?
Yes. There is no charge, no sign-up and no watermark added to your pages. The file you download contains only your own pages, arranged the way you set them.
