How to Cut PDF Pages in Half
When you photocopy or scan an open book, both facing pages land on one wide sheet. The same happens with handouts printed two to a page. Reading them on a phone means constant zooming and sideways scrolling, and printing them wastes paper.
This tool slices each page along a red dashed line on a picture of your page. It starts in the centre, and you can drag it or type a percentage when the spine sits off to one side. Choose "Up and down, into left and right" for book spreads, or "Side to side, into top and bottom" for sheets stacked one above the other. For books read from right to left, tick the right-to-left box and the right half comes first.
Press Apply & download PDF and a new document arrives with each cut page turned into two. The halves are cut from the original page rather than photographed again, so text you could select before is still text afterwards.

Halving PDF Pages in Five Steps
There are only a couple of choices to make.
-
1. Add your PDF
Drag the scan into the box under the short explanation, or tap Choose file. A green note confirms how many pages it contains.
-
2. Pick the direction and place the cut
Use the Direction menu, then look at the page picture. Drag on it to move the red line, or type a value in Cut position. Back to the middle resets it. Faint numbers show which half comes first.
Up and down, into left and rightSide to side, into top and bottom
-
3. Set the order and the pages
Tick "Right-to-left reading order (Arabic, Hebrew, manga)" if the book opens from the right. In Pages to cut, type something like 2-19 so a cover stays whole. A page with its spine elsewhere can get its own cut with "Set the cut separately for the page shown".
-
4. Press Apply & download PDF
Each chosen page is cut in two while a Working… label shows on the button. A note then reports the change, for example "22 pages cut in two, 2 kept whole: 46 pages now", along with the new file size.
-
5. Open the new file
It downloads with "-split-half" added to your file name. Flick through a few pages to make sure the halves are in reading order.

What Does Splitting Pages in Half Mean?
Splitting pages in half divides each page of a PDF into two equal pieces and makes each piece its own page. A landscape spread showing pages 12 and 13 of a book turns into two portrait pages, 12 then 13.
The cut starts in the centre, but you can move it for the whole file or for one page at a time, and pages you leave out stay whole. Each half keeps the content that was on that side of the line, drawn from the original rather than re-scanned.

What gets split in half
- Scanned book spreads
- Two-up printed handouts
- Photocopied study material
- Double slides on one sheet
- Side-by-side forms
- Manga and comic scans
- Two receipts on one scan
Why Split Scanned Spreads?
Single pages are simply easier to use. They fill a phone screen without zooming, print one to a sheet at a readable size, and can be numbered, searched and shared page by page.
“One page per screen is how people actually read.”
- Readable on a phone
- Prints at a sensible size
- Book-like reading order
- Cleaner page-by-page sharing
- No sideways scrolling
- Correct page count
- Text stays text
- Ready for further editing

Tips for Halving Scanned Pages
-
Use the arrows under the page picture to check several spreads. If the spine drifts, drag the line or give that page its own cut.
-
Covers and single pages can stay whole. List only the spreads in Pages to cut, such as 2-19.
-
If spreads came out sideways, straighten them with Rotate PDF before cutting, so the halves fall on the right sides.
-
Check the first few pages after splitting. If left and right look swapped, run it again with the right-to-left box changed.
-
Book scans can be heavy. Compress PDF can make the halved file easier to send.
-
Add page numbers after splitting so each half gets its own number.
Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about this tool.
How do I split a scanned book page into two pages?
Choose the PDF, leave Direction on "Up and down, into left and right", check the red line on the page picture, and press Apply & download PDF. Each double-page spread becomes two single pages in the new file.
Can I cut pages horizontally instead?
Yes. Choose "Side to side, into top and bottom" in the Direction menu. Each page becomes a top half followed by a bottom half.
What does the right-to-left option do?
It puts the right half before the left one. Use it for books and comics that open from the right, such as Arabic, Hebrew, Urdu or Japanese manga.
Will text still be selectable after splitting?
Yes, if it was selectable before. The halves are cut from the original page content rather than turned into pictures, so a text PDF stays a text PDF.
Can I split only some pages?
Yes. Type the pages in Pages to cut, for example 2-19. Pages you leave out, such as a front cover or a back cover, go into the new file whole and in their place.
Can I move the cutting line?
Yes. Pull the red line across the page picture, or type a percentage in Cut position. It applies to every cut page, unless you tick "Set the cut separately for the page shown" to give one page its own line. Back to the middle resets it.
Is my scan uploaded?
No. Cutting happens inside the browser tab you have open, and the halved copy goes into your downloads. None of it crosses the network.
Does it work with password-protected PDFs?
Files limited only on printing or copying open as normal. A PDF locked with an open password cannot be read until you unlock it with Unlock PDF and the password.
Why is the new file larger?
Each half still carries the content of its original page, so the file can grow. If size matters, run the result through Compress PDF.
Will the halving work on a mobile?
Yes. Choose the scan from your phone’s storage, set the direction and press the button. The halved PDF saves to your downloads.
Will Split PDF Pages in Half lower the quality of my PDF?
No. Rearranging, rotating, splitting or joining pages does not re-compress the text or pictures inside them, so they look as sharp as before. Tools that change the layout, such as booklets, scale the pages without redrawing their contents.
Can I use Split PDF Pages in Half on a phone or tablet?
Yes. It works in Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox on phones and tablets as well as computers. Long documents take longer on a phone, but the steps and the result are the same.
Can I rearrange a password-protected PDF?
You need to remove the password first. Use Unlock PDF with the password you already know, then come back and rearrange the pages. None of the tools here can open a file whose password you do not have.
Is Split PDF Pages in Half really free with no watermark?
Yes. There is no charge, no sign-up and no watermark added to your pages. The file you download contains only your own pages, arranged the way you set them.
