What is inside
- readme.txt, employees.csv and data.bin, the same three files as the ZIP samples
- The 7z Copy method: files are stored, not compressed
- A CRC-32 checksum for every file, so 7-Zip can test the archive
- Each archive is exactly its labelled size
- Tested with 7-Zip: it lists, tests and extracts every size
Try it with these tools
They run in your browser. The file you downloaded stays on your device.
- 7z Viewer List what is inside a 7z archive and extract it, in your browser.
- Archive Viewer Look inside a ZIP, TAR, GZ, RAR or 7z without extracting it.
- File Type Identifier Find out what a file really is by reading its bytes, not its name.
- File Signature Checker Read a file’s magic bytes and catch an extension that is lying.
- File Hash Generator Work out the MD5, SHA-1 and SHA-256 of a file without uploading it.
- Checksum Verifier Check a download against the checksum the publisher listed.
About 7z files
7z is the native format of 7-Zip, a free archiver first released in 1999. It usually compresses with LZMA or LZMA2, which often makes smaller archives than ZIP, and it can also encrypt file names as well as contents.
It is popular for software downloads, game mods and backups, where a smaller download matters. On Windows it needs 7-Zip or a similar program; newer Windows 11 builds and most Linux desktops can open it too.
The problem people hit is support. A 7z file that opens at home may not open on a work laptop or phone with no 7z reader. Split archives (.7z.001, .7z.002) and password-protected ones also fail in tools that only handle the basic case.

Questions
Why is the 7z archive not compressed?
The Copy method stores the files as they are, which lets each archive be an exact size. It is still a valid 7z file with checksums. To test LZMA handling, make your own archive with 7-Zip.
Does it have a password?
No. None of the samples are encrypted, so any 7z reader should open them straight away.
How do I test the archive in 7-Zip?
Right-click it and choose 7-Zip, then Test archive, or run 7z t on the command line. It should report no errors for all three files.

For developers: exact bytes and SHA-256
Sizes are decimal (1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes). The hosted files never change between builds, so these checksums stay valid.
