What is inside

  • readme.txt, a short text file saying what is in the archive
  • employees.csv, a small table compressed with Deflate
  • data.bin, random bytes stored without compression
  • Each archive is exactly its labelled size, to the byte
  • Fixed timestamps, so the files and their SHA-256 do not change between builds

About ZIP files

ZIP is an archive format from 1989. It packs many files into one and usually compresses each file on its own, most often with the Deflate method. A list of the files, called the central directory, sits at the end of the archive.

It is the most widely supported archive there is. Windows, macOS and Linux open it without extra software, and many other formats are ZIP files underneath, including .docx, .xlsx, .jar and .epub.

What goes wrong most often is file names. Old ZIP tools stored names in a local code page, so names in Hindi, Tamil, Chinese or with accents can come out as nonsense on another computer. Very large archives are the other trap: files over 4 GB need the ZIP64 extension, and some old tools do not read it.

Questions

Why does data.bin not get smaller when I zip it again?

It is random bytes, and random data cannot be compressed. That is on purpose: it lets the archive hit an exact size and stops a tool from making a 25 MB test file look small.

Is a file inside the ZIP stored or compressed?

Both kinds are there. employees.csv is deflated and data.bin is stored as-is, so one archive tests both methods. Most ZIP viewers show the method next to each file.

How do I check the download is not damaged?

Compare its SHA-256 with the one in the table on this page. The File Hash Generator on this site works it out in your browser without uploading the file.

For developers: exact bytes and SHA-256

Sizes are decimal (1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes). The hosted files never change between builds, so these checksums stay valid.
