About RTF files

RTF, the Rich Text Format, is a text-based document format from Microsoft. Formatting is written as control words starting with a backslash, such as \b for bold and \par for a new paragraph, and braces group text together. You can open an RTF in a plain editor and read it.

Almost every word processor opens RTF: Word, LibreOffice, WordPad and TextEdit among them. That makes it a common choice for exporting documents from older software, legal and medical systems, and anything that needs formatted text without the complexity of .docx.

Non-English characters are where RTF files most often go wrong. They are stored as escape codes such as \u252? for ü, and a reader that ignores those shows question marks instead. If accents vanish after conversion, check how the tool handles \u codes.

Questions

What is the long run of x characters near the end of the file?

Padding to reach the exact size. It sits inside a group that starts with \*, which the RTF spec tells readers to skip when they do not know it, so nothing shows on the page.

Why does the 25 MB RTF take a while to open?

It holds about 350,000 formatted lines, which is thousands of pages. Word processors lay out the whole document, so a slow first open is normal and is exactly what the large file is for.

Can I use these RTF files for free, including at work?

Yes. The site's own script made them from invented records, and they are public domain (CC0), so personal and commercial use are both fine.

For developers: exact bytes and SHA-256

Sizes are decimal (1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes). The hosted files never change between builds, so these checksums stay valid.
