About text and Markdown files

Plain text sounds like the format with nothing to go wrong, and it is where encoding problems appear most often. A file is only a sequence of bytes; what those bytes mean depends on an encoding that the file does not usually declare. Read UTF-8 as Latin-1 and every accented character turns to mojibake.

These samples are UTF-8 without a byte order mark, which is the modern default nearly everywhere except some Windows tooling. The non-Latin scripts are there so an encoding problem is visible immediately rather than three weeks later.

Markdown adds structure to plain text while staying readable as plain text. There are several dialects, and they disagree most about tables, footnotes and raw HTML. So test a Markdown converter on a table in particular. This sample includes one for that reason.

Questions

What encoding are these files?

UTF-8, with no byte order mark and Unix line endings. If the non-Latin characters look like nonsense when you open them, the tool reading the file has guessed the wrong encoding. The sample is designed to show exactly that fault.

Which Markdown dialect is the .md file?

CommonMark, plus the pipe-table syntax from GitHub Flavored Markdown. Tables are the commonest point of disagreement between dialects, which is why one is included.

Why is the SVG here rather than with the images?

Because an SVG is text. You can open it in any editor and read it, and it is minified, formatted and validated by text tools rather than image ones.

For developers: exact bytes and SHA-256

Sizes are decimal (1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes). The hosted files never change between builds, so these checksums stay valid.
