What is inside

  • An H.264 test pattern at 25 frames a second, with a running clock
  • A beeping 440 Hz tone in AAC, so audio and video sync is easy to check
  • 10 KB: 1 s at 160 × 90, no audio. 100 KB: 4 s at 320 × 180. 500 KB: 8 s at 640 × 360
  • 1 MB: 10 s at 1280 × 720
  • Above 1 MB, up to 1 GB: the same 1 MB clip plus an MP4 free box, which players skip
  • The index (moov) is at the start, so playback can begin before the download ends

About MP4 files

MP4 is a container format, standardised as MPEG-4 Part 14. It holds video, audio and subtitle tracks, plus an index that tells a player where each frame is. H.264 video with AAC audio is by far the most common mix inside it.

It is the format that plays almost everywhere: every browser, phone, smart TV and video site accepts H.264 MP4. That is why upload forms and video tools test against it first.

Two things commonly go wrong. First, a file named .mp4 may hold a codec a player cannot decode, such as H.265, even though the container is fine. Second, when the index (the moov box) sits at the end of the file, a browser must download everything before it can start playing. These samples put the index at the start.

Questions

Why is a 100 MB or 1 GB video only 10 seconds long?

Every file above 1 MB is the 10-second 720p clip with an MP4 free box added to reach the size, made on your device so nothing large is downloaded. They play normally and are right for testing upload limits, but not for testing long videos or high bitrates.

Why does the 10 KB video have no sound?

There is not enough room. One second of 160 × 90 video fills most of the 10 KB, so the smallest clip is video only. Every other size has an AAC audio track.

Will compressing a big sample make it much smaller?

Yes, but mostly because the padding is thrown away. A tool that rewrites the file usually drops the free box, so you get back about the 1 MB clip. That tells you little about how well the tool compresses real video.

For developers: exact bytes and SHA-256

Sizes are decimal (1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes). The hosted files never change between builds, so these checksums stay valid.
