About WebM files

WebM is an open video format started by Google in 2010. It is built on the Matroska container and carries VP8 or VP9 video, or AV1, with Vorbis or Opus audio. All of these codecs are free to use without licence fees.

Browsers support WebM well, and it is common on the web: YouTube serves VP9, screen recorders in the browser often save WebM, and many sites use it for short looping clips in place of GIF.

The weak spot is Apple and older software. Safari and iPhones added WebM playback later than other browsers, and some video editors and TV apps still will not import it. When a WebM will not open, converting it to MP4 is the usual answer.

Questions

Why is a 100 MB or 1 GB video only 10 seconds long?

Every file above 1 MB is the 10-second 720p clip with a WebM Void element added to reach the size, made on your device. They play normally, so they suit upload-limit tests, but they are not long videos.

What is a Void element?

WebM is built from EBML elements, and Void is one the format defines as empty space that readers must skip. Using it adds bytes without changing a single frame.

Is this the same video as the MP4 sample?

Yes. Same pattern, same clock, same tone and the same lengths. Only the codecs differ, VP9 and Opus instead of H.264 and AAC, so you can compare the two formats fairly.

For developers: exact bytes and SHA-256

Sizes are decimal (1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes). The hosted files never change between builds, so these checksums stay valid.
