About CSV files

CSV is the oldest and least specified format on this page. There is no official standard everybody follows, only a widely-cited memo from 2005 and a great deal of local convention, which is why two CSV files can disagree about almost everything.

The awkward cases are always the same: a comma inside a value, a quotation mark inside a quoted value, a line break inside a cell, and which line ending the file uses. This sample keeps values simple on purpose, so that when an import fails you know the failure is not the file.

CSV carries no types. Every value is text until something decides otherwise, which is how leading zeros vanish from phone numbers and how a date becomes a number. If types matter to you, a spreadsheet or JSON will keep them and CSV will not.

Questions

Why offer a TSV as well?

Because it is what you get when you copy cells out of a spreadsheet and paste them into a text file, and many tools that claim to read CSV fail on it without any warning. Having both lets you find that out in ten seconds.

Does the file use commas or semicolons?

Commas. Several European locales export CSV with semicolons instead, because the comma is their decimal separator. If your tool expects semicolons, this sample will import as a single column, and that tells you something useful about the tool.

Will Excel open this correctly?

It will open, though Excel applies its own guesses about types. Watch the started column: depending on your regional settings Excel may reinterpret the dates. That behaviour is Excel, not the file.

For developers: exact bytes and SHA-256

Sizes are decimal (1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes). The hosted files never change between builds, so these checksums stay valid.
