What is inside

  • A # comment on line one, then a top-level key, employees, holding a list
  • One list item per employee with 9 keys: 48 in the 10 KB file, 4,779 in the 1 MB file, 118,018 in the 25 MB file
  • Every string in double quotes, including the started date, so it stays text
  • Numbers for id and salary, and true or false for active
  • Two-space indentation, no tabs
  • Exact to the byte, filled with a # comment line at the end

About YAML files

YAML is a text format for data that uses indentation instead of brackets. A dash starts a list item, a colon separates a key from its value, and a # starts a comment. It holds the same kinds of data as JSON, and YAML 1.2 is written so that valid JSON is also valid YAML.

Most people meet YAML in configuration: Docker Compose, Kubernetes, GitHub Actions, Ansible and many app settings files. Large YAML files are less common, which is why a big one is a good test of how a tool copes.

The problem that catches almost everyone is values that look like something else. Unquoted, a word like no or a version like 1.10 can be read as a boolean or a number, depending on the parser. Quoting strings, as these files do, removes the guesswork.

Questions

Why is the started date in quotes?

Some YAML parsers turn an unquoted 2017-06-20 into a date object, and others keep it as text. Quoting it means every parser gives back the same string.

What is the row of dashes after # at the end of the file?

Padding. It is a comment line that brings the file to exactly 10,000, 100,000 or up to 25,000,000 bytes. Every YAML parser skips comments, so the data is the same.

Is the 25 MB YAML file too big for my tool?

It may be, and that is a useful thing to find out. Tools that build the whole document in memory, or that highlight every line, often slow down long before 25 MB. Start with the 1 MB file and go up.

For developers: exact bytes and SHA-256

Sizes are decimal (1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes). The hosted files never change between builds, so these checksums stay valid.
