About PDF files

PDF (Portable Document Format) was designed by Adobe in 1993 to solve one problem: a document that looks the same everywhere. A PDF carries its own fonts, layout and images, so a page printed in Chennai matches a page printed in Chicago.

That fidelity is also why PDFs are awkward to edit. The format describes where marks go on a page, not what the document means, so "editing a PDF" is closer to editing a photograph of a page than to editing a Word file. Tools that convert PDF to Word are reconstructing structure that was never stored.

A PDF can hold selectable text or only a picture of text. The difference decides whether a search finds anything, whether a screen reader can read it, and whether OCR is needed. This sample holds real text, so extraction has something to find.

Questions

Is this sample PDF free to use?

Yes. It was generated by a script in this site's own source, contains no third-party content, and you can use it for anything: testing, demos, documentation or teaching.

Why is the sample PDF so small?

It is around 6 KB because it is text and vector shapes rather than photographs. That makes it a poor test of compression, which mostly works on images. To test compression properly, use a scanned document or a PDF full of photographs.

Does it contain real text or a scan?

Real, selectable text. Copy from it, search it, or run it through PDF to Text and you will get words back. If you need a scanned PDF to test OCR, print this one to paper and photograph it, or export it as an image and convert that back to PDF.

For developers: exact bytes and SHA-256

Sizes are decimal (1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes). The hosted files never change between builds, so these checksums stay valid.
