About Word files
A .docx file is not a document in the way it appears to be. It is a zip archive containing XML: one part describing the text and its formatting, others describing styles, relationships and any embedded images. Rename one to .zip and open it and you can read the whole thing.
That structure is why Word files convert better than PDFs. The XML says "this is a Heading 2" rather than "these letters are 18 points and bold at this position", so a converter has real structure to carry across rather than a layout to guess at.
The older .doc format, used before Word 2007, is not the same format at all. It is binary, with no XML inside. Most modern tools, including the ones here, expect .docx.

Questions
Will this open in Google Docs and LibreOffice?
Yes. It is a standard Office Open XML document and opens in Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice Writer, Pages and anything else that reads .docx.
Why does the sample have no images?
So that a conversion problem is unambiguous. When a file contains text, tables and images at once and the output is wrong, the first job is working out which part failed. This one isolates text and formatting.
Can I get a .doc instead of a .docx?
No. The old binary .doc format has been superseded since 2007, no tool on this site produces it, and offering one would mean shipping a sample nothing here can read back.

For developers: exact bytes and SHA-256
Sizes are decimal (1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes). The hosted files never change between builds, so these checksums stay valid.
