What is inside

  • A sky gradient, a sun and three ridges of hills, with film grain over the whole picture
  • Sizes from 63 × 47 px in the 10 KB file to 941 × 706 in the 1 MB file. Sizes above 1 MB, up to 1 GB, are made on your device from the 1 MB one, with the extra bytes in a comment chunk
  • 24-bit RGB, 8 bits per channel, no transparency
  • The grain makes each pixel different, so the files behave like a photo, not a flat graphic
  • Each file is exact to the byte, padded with a tEXt Comment chunk that viewers do not show

About PNG files

PNG is a lossless image format: it compresses the pixels, and when you open the file you get back exactly the same pixels. It supports full colour and transparency, which makes it the usual choice for screenshots, logos and graphics with sharp edges.

You find PNG across the web, in apps and in design work. Its weak spot is photos, where every pixel is a little different, so there is little for the compression to find. A photo saved as PNG is often several times the size of the same photo as a JPG.

The common surprise is that converting a PNG to JPG removes transparency. JPG has no alpha channel, so see-through areas get filled with a solid colour, often black or white. These samples have no transparency, so that problem will not appear with them.

Questions

Why is the 1 MB PNG only 941 × 706 pixels?

The film grain gives every pixel its own value, and PNG cannot shrink that kind of detail much without losing data. So each pixel costs about 1.5 bytes, and 1 MB buys a fairly small picture.

How is each PNG exactly the size on the label?

The script picks the largest 4:3 picture that fits under the target, then adds a tEXt comment chunk for the bytes that are left. The chunk is part of the PNG standard and does not change a single pixel.

Can I use these PNG images commercially?

Yes. The landscape is drawn by code on this site, not taken from a camera or a stock library, and the files are public domain (CC0).

For developers: exact bytes and SHA-256

Sizes are decimal (1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes). The hosted files never change between builds, so these checksums stay valid.
