Sample Image files
A 600 × 400 PNG made for testing. The gradient shows compression artefacts and the grid shows scaling errors.

What is inside
- 600 × 400 pixels, 24-bit colour
- A diagonal gradient, for spotting banding after lossy compression
- A 50-pixel grid, for spotting scaling and interpolation errors
- No transparency, so JPEG conversion is a fair comparison
- A matching vector image, for comparing raster against vector scaling

About Image files
PNG is lossless: compress it, decompress it, and you get back the identical pixels. That makes it right for screenshots, diagrams and anything with text or sharp edges, and wrong for photographs, where JPEG or WebP produce far smaller files at a quality nobody can tell apart.
This sample deliberately combines a smooth gradient with hard grid lines, because those two things fail differently. Lossy compression shows as banding across the gradient; poor resizing shows as blurred or uneven grid lines. A flat-coloured test image would hide both.
PNG supports transparency and JPEG does not. This is the most common reason a converted logo arrives with a black or white box behind it.

Questions
Why is a simple image 70 KB?
Because a gradient is expensive to store losslessly. PNG compresses by finding repetition, and a gradient repeats almost nothing: every pixel differs slightly from its neighbour. The same image as JPEG or WebP will be a fraction of the size, which is the comparison the sample is for.
Is there a sample JPEG?
Not as a download. Convert this PNG with the PNG to JPG tool and you will have one that is directly comparable. The content is the same, so any difference you see comes from the format, not the picture.
Can I use this image commercially?
Yes. It is generated by a script in this repository from shapes and a gradient, contains no photography and no third-party content, and carries no restrictions.
