What is inside

  • 24-bit colour, uncompressed, with no alpha channel
  • The same grainy landscape used for the JPG, PNG and WebP samples
  • Dimensions chosen so each file ends a few bytes under its label
  • The 10 KB file is 72 × 46 pixels; the 25 MB file is 3328 × 2504
  • Standard bottom-up row order, as nearly all BMP files use

About BMP files

BMP is the Windows bitmap format. It dates from the early versions of Windows and stores pixels with little or no compression. A 24-bit BMP spends three bytes on every pixel, so its size is easy to work out from its dimensions.

You still meet BMP in older Windows programs, scanners, industrial cameras, embedded screens and school exercises on image processing. It is simple to read and write by hand, which is why it is often the first format people learn to parse.

The thing that trips people up is the row layout. Rows are stored bottom to top, and each row is padded to a multiple of 4 bytes. Code that ignores either rule shows the picture upside down or slanted. And because nothing is compressed, a BMP is many times larger than the same picture as PNG or JPEG.

Questions

Why are the BMP files not exactly 10 KB or 1 MB?

A BMP has no place to put padding that readers ignore, so its size is set by the width and height. The dimensions were picked to land a few bytes under each target.

Why does a BMP have so few pixels for its size?

BMP stores every pixel at full size, 3 bytes each, with no compression. The 1 MB BMP is only 672 × 496 pixels, while the 1 MB JPG, which compresses, is 1728 × 1296. The 25 MB BMP holds about 8 million pixels, all real picture.

How much smaller will it get as PNG?

Less than you might hope. The grain gives PNG little repetition to work with, so JPG or WebP shrink the same picture far more.

For developers: exact bytes and SHA-256

Sizes are decimal (1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes). The hosted files never change between builds, so these checksums stay valid.
